Ok

The printer is managed by a NT Server. I haven't installed any print management/software on the HP-UX box. The printer is a HP4050. I know the printer is connected to the network with no problems. I can print from a Solaris workstation.

I think the problem is with the HP-UX system in-regards configuration. Not sure how to add a printer to this environment. I am using SAM to add the printer. But I keep getting an error when checking for PD_CLIENT.

Hi,

New to HP-UX and I'm trying to setup a printer in HP-UX 11.00. I'm using the SAM app and adding physical printer, but I keep getting this error, "Cannot find hostname" when it's looking at the swlist for the PD_CLIENT.

What am I missing?

What kind of printer are you adding? Is it on the network? Do you have jet-admin installed (HPNP)? Is it a network printer other then HP?
What kind of printer is it?

Hi Sean,

Is the scheduler running ? Can you post output of lpstat -t? Try adding the printer through command line:

# lpadmin -p printername -v device_file -m type
# enable printer
# accept printer

HTH,
Shiju

You can try to set it up as a remote printer and let NT manage be the print server or set-up Jet-Admin which is free.

Then configure it as a network printer and let the Jet-Direct card in the HP printer work as the print server.

The product for Jet-Admin is also known as HPNP

Hi Sean,

To make this very basic, you can try this..
First edit your /etc/host file and add the IP of the network printer and the printer name; and save the file.
Next run SAM and try to add the printer now. With the entry in your host file it should be able to find it.
===================
Tip:
One of the preferred method for many of us here is by using JetAdmin. You can load this on your HPUX server easily and should be able to download the file for installation by checking this thread: http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x31ebf9beca68d511abcd0090277a778c,00.html

There is also WebJetAdmin, but I do not recommend this software on HPUX (although others like it...)

Regards and hope this helps get you started,
Rita
This is the error message I get when I try to add a printer through SAM

Attempted to determine if the fileset "PD-CLIENT" from the product "DistributedPrint" exists on your system but the swlist command failed. Stderr from swlist is:

ERROR: Could not contact host "qa116". Make sure the hostname is correct.
ERROR: More information may be found in the daemon logfile on this target (default location is qa116:/var/adm/sw/swagentd.log). x
x
