Hello Gurus,

I have a rp7420 11iv1 box connected to a HP SSL1016 Tape Autoloader. It has a single LTO2 drive with 16 slots.

I have HP dataprotector for backups. When i started the backup i saw that it uses the device /dev/rmt/4mn for backup.

However i cannot see the same tape device in the ioscan output on the server.

#ll /dev/rmt/*mn
crw-rw-rw- 2 bin bin 205 0x023040 Nov 20 2006 /dev/rmt/0mn
crw-rw-rw- 2 bin bin 205 0x086040 Aug 16 2007 /dev/rmt/1mn
crw-rw-rw- 2 bin bin 205 0x095040 Oct 27 09:38 /dev/rmt/2mn
crw-rw-rw- 2 bin bin 205 0x025040 Dec 20 2007 /dev/rmt/3mn
crw-rw-rw- 2 bin bin 205 0x0a5040 Dec 19 2007 /dev/rmt/4mn

#ioscan -fnC tape
Class I H/W Path Driver S/W State H/W Type Description
========================================================================
tape 1 1/0/12/1/0.6.0 stape CLAIMED DEVICE QUANTUM DLT8000
/dev/rmt/1m /dev/rmt/c8t6d0BEST
/dev/rmt/1mb /dev/rmt/c8t6d0BESTb
/dev/rmt/1mn /dev/rmt/c8t6d0BESTn
/dev/rmt/1mnb /dev/rmt/c8t6d0BESTnb
tape 2 1/0/14/1/0.5.0 stape CLAIMED DEVICE HP Ultrium 2-SC
SI
/dev/rmt/2m /dev/rmt/c9t5d0BEST
/dev/rmt/2mb /dev/rmt/c9t5d0BESTb
/dev/rmt/2mn /dev/rmt/c9t5d0BESTn
/dev/rmt/2mnb /dev/rmt/c9t5d0BESTnb

#mt -f /dev/rmt/4mn status
on tape open: No such device or address

The backups run properly.

I wonder why i can't see the device /dev/rmt/4mn in ioscan output.

Can somebody clarify

Sunny

Not sure if data protector is really using 4mn, but however, you can run into problems if you - let's say connect a DLT with ID 3 first and a DDS with the same ID instead later.

If you then manually change *anything*, the problems may be worst.

Have a look at your 0m device ;-))

I would consider to delete them all and re-create. Notice - you will need to adjust DP after this.
