HPPI adding a printer problems..

brain picking. any thoughts appreciated:

one of our districts purchased a new printer HP1518ni. I can browser to the web interface, I can ping it from my HP/UX system. NMAP shows port 9100 enabled..

where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is a valid IP address.

I attempt to "Add printer to local spooler"

Get error below:
Enter the network printer name or IP address (q - quit): xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
!! xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is NOT an acceptable name!!
Either it is NOT a network printer or this host is denied access
to it!

Hi,

if it's a network printer you have to select "Add Network Based Printer/Plotter", not Add Local Printer/Spooler.

I suppose you're doing that by sam:

Printers and Plotters ---> LP Sppoler ---> Printers and Plotters

From the menu select Actions ---> Add Network Based Printer/Plotter

Do you get the same problem?

Hi,

ok, from hppi interface try to telnet it:

hppi

2) JetDirect Configuration (super-user only)
- TCP/IP configurable parameters

5) Open Telnet Session to JetDirect Card

Do you get username request?

See if you can enable the telnet service in the printer and try again.
Verify from the hp server

telnet 10.3.138.21 9100
telnet 10.3.138.21 9101

If everything checks out, try hppi again.

Hopefully, it can be made to work but the web site states:

In other words, no Linux, HP-UX, AIX, etc

New HP printers are designed much faster (typically 2-3 years) than HP-UX printer scripts. It is far easier to use addqueue rather than hppi. Try this:

addqueue -q myprn -h xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -b off -t off -r off

You may have to pick a -i option that comes close to this printer's capabilities. Use addqueue -l to list all the possible printer scripts.

These HP printers that don't like playing on HP/UX are a real pain.. doing the "point to a working" ip with 5si printer in the hosts file, did the trick.. then repointing back to new printer worked..

kind of ugly but it floats my boat.
