external storage

Hi,

I am running HP-UX 11.11 (server Model 9000/800/rp3440). I have external storage attached to HP server through SCSI. external storage was working fine till I rebooted the server. I am not able to see the lvm's which are on external storage. ther are not getting mounted. Please let me know how to troubleshoot. I am able to see the disks (3 * 36GB)

Check the SCSI cable/power connection/etc of your attached device.

You could do a

insf -e

If your device is a tape, then

ioscan -fnCtape

Check your kernel driver status. Maybe the driver was removed from the current kernel.

Use SAM Kernel Configuration/Drivers

For the stape (SCSI tape driver), you should read at the current state and pending state "In"

Before trying to access data on the disks, you need to make sure you can access the disks.

You can do a 'strings /etc/lvmtab' to make sure which devices were in the volumegroups. Then make sure those devices show up in "ioscan -fnkC disk".

If the external disks are the visible, you might need to do a "vgchange -a y " before you can access the logical volumes.

when I am trying to active vg's:

Did you do a shutdown or a reboot only? The lock file is probably left over - try to delete it.

First make sure that no LVM commands are running (lvchange, for instance). Running

# ps -ef | egrep 'lv|vg'

could help.

I have shutdown and started the server

I have removed lvm_lock file

/usr/sbin/lv* and /usr/sbin/pv*

Two days ago, I tried to extend lvm size of /usr in runlevel 3 by running this command

lvextend -L 2504 /dev/vg00/lvol7

then I got the below

1. Kill all processes running in /usr
_OR_
Get into single-user mode
(refer to "man hpux" for more details).
2. lvextend -L 2504 /dev/vg00/lvol7
3. umount /dev/vg00/lvol7
4. extendfs /dev/vg00/lvol7
5. mount /dev/vg00/lvol7 /usr

will it be the problem

The extension of /usr isn't the problem. It only tells us that lvchange was working then.

Can you do:

# touch /etc/lvmconf//lvm_lock

(Just to make sure if there are permission problems.)

Also check out the permissions of vgchange:

# ls -lasd $(which vgchange)

all the vg* and lv* commands owner is showing as oracle:oinstall

I am able to create lvm_lock in /etc/lvmconf

2{HP-UX-root}# ls -lasd /sbin/vgchange
1760 -r-sr-xr-x 26 oracle oinstall 901120 Mar 20 2007 /sbin/vgchange

That is your problem... Some script has changed the ownership of your LVM commands to the user oracle.
Since there is a SUID bit on the commands, the effective user is oracle.
And oracle doesn't have write permission in /etc/lvmconf

So there are 2 things you need to do:
1) fix the problem so that the commands are owned by root again.
2) shoot the bastard who changed the ownership. Or at least, give him a good reprimand. Even if you did it yourself ;-)

how come a normal usre oracle can change the file ownership of the files he doesn't belong.

Orcle user has the root password also. what might have happened in this case.

He can't, only root can.

You might want to check the IDs:
ls -l -n /sbin/vgchange

Obviously root changed those file ownerships after the use of that password.
