Fibre Channel Card Status: AWAITING_LINK_UP

We have many HP RX servers with multiple unused 2 or 4 port cards. Currently these cards are configured in status "AWAITING_LINK_UP"

Recently a port on one of these unused cards attempted to activate:

vmunix: 0/0/4/1/0/4/0: Fabric Name Server rejected GPN_FT query.
vmunix: Reason code: unable to perform request;
vmunix: Explanation: FC-4 Type not registered.
vmunix: This may indicate that the HBA port is not part of a zone.
vmunix: Please check zone configuration on your switch.

While no damage was done, it did create alarms.
I could not determine what caused this card to attempt to activate.

1) Perhaps something changed on the fabric switch ?

Since this card is unused

1) I could it be simply disable it.

2) Would there be any unwanted side effects from disabling an unused card ?

3) Could unused cards set in a state other than disabled, so they won't turn noisy?

Are these "unused FC cards" cabled to your SAN switches or NOT?

If those are NOT cabled and you had those messages, then someone must have plugged in an FC Cable?

Check via: fcmsutil /dev/tdN or /dev/fcdN

If it has a link active.
AWAITING_LINK_UP means there is no link. There are few possibilities:
-Bad HBA /or unzoned
-Bad cable /no connection
-Bad switch/storage port on the other side or
not configured

Possibly it was configured as a stand by so
it got tried to activate.
These are unused.
They aren't used.
They are extra installed FC cards.
Yes, I'm guessing that someone must have plugged in a cable or did something on the switch.

So, that does seem possible ? Agreed ?

The card when I checked it did not have an active link.

Something came along and attempted to activate/connect to it.

Frankly, I don't know what happened to cause that.

Short of removing the card, I'm wondering what the best method of dealing with this problem is.

Disable the FC card if needed reenable again .
with the below commands.
/opt/fcms/bin/fcmsutil device_file -f disable

/opt/fcms/bin/fcmsutil device_file enable

As a matter of policy ... I think the unused cards ought to have their ports disabled.

FYI...

disabling the FC card via fmcsutil does not hold on reboot. To do so edit /etc/rc.config.d/ file
