Yes, that's right, I'm pretty much new to HP-UX. Therefore, I'm not even sure I'm in the correct forum. Perhaps someone can point me in the right direction and I apologize if I'm in the wrong place.

Just recently, we acquired (sp?) an HP9000 K460 server. If it will adequately meet our rural school district's needs for district wide service, I will need access to this server via Apple Macintosh and Windows 9x, Me, and perhaps a couple of Xp machines. I have heard it rumored about, there is such a client available to load onto our windows machines that will allow access to this server. Perhaps I should also mention all buildings are running Novell Netware v5.1 on LC2000 NetServers or less. So whatever client is recommended would need to run in conjunction with Novell Client v3.31.

It (the HP9000) currently has (2) processors installed, and both memory carriers are fully loaded with approx. 2gig of ram. In addition to the integrated 10bT RJ45/AUI port, it has (2) 100bT RJ45 ports as well. Not real sure what long term shape the batteries in the ups are like, but the system is up and running on v11.x

I'm only a little bit familiar with HP-UX. I can get around...eh, ok with a gui, and only marginally (enough to get thoroughly lost) with a command prompt. Learning curve is basically straight up on this for awhile.

Again, is there a client I can install on Windows machines specifically, and if possible on Macs as well.?

I'd post in both the server/9000 and the hp-ux/System Admin groups. That way you will sure to get some good info.

You might look at Reflection to see if it can meet your needs for a client. http://support.wrq.com/manuals/

It runs on most Window boxes and on MACs. Whether it does what you are looking for is hard to say since I don't know what you want to do with it. You can talk to the command line with telnet from most windows boxes without any special software or use win-ftp or equivalent just to move files around. The netware may be a problem tho unless you are also running TCP/IP.

If you want to use your K-class as a file server, look into CIFS9000 (it's free):

I'm not to sure about the netware stuff though.

Hi Steve.
For checking the status of the batteries, try this :
-------------------------------------------
1) Copy the inittab file:
cp /etc/inittab /etc/inittab.backup

Then edit the /etc/inittab file and look for a line like:
ups1::respawn:rtprio 0 /etc/ups_mond -f /etc/ups_conf

change respawn to off
#ups1::off:rtprio 0 /etc/ups_mond -f /etc/ups_conf

Save your changes and activate them with
init q

After that the ups_mond should not run
ps -ef |grep ups_mond

Edit file /usr/lib/uucp/Devices #
Add entry: Direct tty0p1 - 1200 direct 0 = LU # 1 = Port #

2) Look in /etc/ups_conf and check for port that this program uses.
It is most likely /dev/tty0p1. Use this port for all subsequent commands
where the word PORTNAME is shown.

# cat ups_conf
shutdown_delay_mins:5
shutdown_timeout_mins:10
upstty:/dev/tty0p1:SOLA The PORTNAME is /dev/tty0p1.

4)connection with cu
use command:
cu -m -l tty0p1 -s1200 dir

type "N"
"NM" returns

press Return
"CM" returns

the following Commands are available:

B Battery Voltage ddd.d (volts)
C UPS Internal Operating Temperature
F UPS AC operating Frequency
L Input AC Voltage
O Output AC Voltage
P Load Power
W Report Unit Type
~. ends the connection

5) change "off" to "respawn" in inittab file and after "init q" the system
should restart the ups_mond process, if not you can use SAM to start the
process.
