Thanks, for the info I will be sure to download it.. Ok, now you have got me thinking.. From what i can tell, i can safely connect the tape drive to the rp3440, is there a way i can utilize that tape drive via network? nfs mount or something? I know i am probably grasping at straws but is there anyway i can utilize that tape drive remotely from the rp3440 to the rp4440?

I have an rp4440 and I am trying to attach a DAT72 HP C7438A- external tape drive to one of the SCSI: ext_bus 2 0/1/1/0 c8xx CLAIMED INTERFACE SCSI C1010 Ultra160 Wide LVD A6829-60101, this card has two ports, so I connected the drive(while the system is up)to the external B port..As soon as i ran the ioscan -f, insf -e.. i get a ton of errors in dmesg, syslog and all over the place.. These are production systems and i am only trying to attach the drive long enough to create an ignite tape for our upcoming DR test..We also have rp3440's in our environment and they are at the same OS level(11.11) and no reboot is required when i attach the (HP C7438A)drive to them.

One thing that i noticed is that the rp3440's use the wide SCSI connection and the tape drive does too..So the SCSI cable i use is same to sameI(68pin) however, the rp4440 use the small SCSI lVD/SE so i had to get a cable that had the smaller SCSI connection on one end the larger SCSI connection on the other to connect to the tape drive.

pardon my terminology..

Can someone help? I need an answer ASAP..

There is one important thing on a rp4440:

The core I/O card has 2 external SCSI connectors, because there are 2 internal busses.

NEVER open an active bus!

Depending on your configuration (hardware), the internal disks are on 1 or 2 internal busses.

If they are on 2, you CANNOT (MUST NOT) connect external devices on that bus!

An "ioscan -fn" will clarify if you are using "simplex" or "duplex" disk configuration - post it!

BTW, more or less the same kind of problem for the rp3440 - the upper internal disk is sharing the bus with external devices on the built-in connector! If the upper disk is installed, DO NOT connect a tape there!

Take a look at the user guide on page 116 at the "CAUTION" paragraph. You can not plug in external devices if the SCSI controller is configured in duplex mode. And your server is configured in duplex mode.

http://bizsupport2.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c01404131/c01404131.pdf

In your opinion, what are my options to getting an Ignite image of this system or getting this tape drive to work? I do not have a rw/DVD attached. I have an image that i created from the rp3440, can that be an option to use to build the rp4440?

The rp3440 and rp4440 are very similar and an ignite image from one server can be used on the other. Take a look at the patch level and add-on software on each server to see if there is something extra on the rp4440. You have 2 extra LAN cards (3 total) and 2 FC HBAs and SAN access on the rp4440 but what about the rp3440?

You can also look into make_net_recovery.

Also you have 2 unused PCI slots in your server, you can add a scsi controller.

currently i do not have a designated Ignite server in our environment, can you provide me with instructions to configure one real quick? The only server i can use right now is a spare rp3440, i should be able to turn that one into an ignite server and maybe create a tape from that.

In the meantime, i will make the patch comparison between the rp3440/rp4440

Thanks again for your help.

TTr,
You mentioned that there were other slots, are you suggesting i take that card out and put it in another slot? Will that make my issue go away? And if so, which slot?

No I am not suggesting to take the card out. I thought I was clear saying "you can add a scsi controller". You can buy a scsi controller and install it on any available slot.

If you look on the server, the PCI slots #1 and #2 are colored light blue. These slots have factory installed cards, #1 is for the disks and #2 is for the lan. The remaining slots are colored red (or dark red, I am not good with color hues) and are for add on cards.

Each pci slot is attached to an i/o bus and has different i/o bandwidth. Take a look at the quickspecs and the i/o architecture to see the speed of each slot.

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12034_na/12034_na.PDF

Download and save the quickspecs and the user manual, they will soon disappear from the HP web site.
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DocumentIndex.jsp?contentType=SupportManual〈=en&cc=us&docIndexId=64180&taskId=101&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=2512015
