Unallocated disk space

The OS HP-UX installed factory installed does not allocated all of its disk, neither the all of the diska space. Look ate the first email sent to root:

Subject: Unallocated disk space

System Installation Note:

    As installed, your system does not have all of its disk space
    available for immediate use. If this system was factory
    installed, this was done to allow flexibility in configuring
    your system. You may use the LVM (Logical Volume Manager)
    portion of SAM to allocate more disk space for your use.

You have a total of 37680 megabytes of disk space unallocated
in 1 Logical Volume group(s).

My question is: what is the best and safe option to do this expand? The SAM interface or manually? Please, to consider: I'm not a sysadmin, I use the 2 itanium CPUs to my crypto researchs.

We'll need just a bit more information about this system.

Run these commands and copy the results:

uname -rm

bdf

HP-UX breaks up storage into smaller pieces called logical volumes or lvols for short. These pieces are attached to the root filesystem with various names such as /usr, /opt, /var and so on. If you need space in order to add more applications or database products, /opt or perhaps /usr should be expanded. If you need space to hold files for you crypto research, I would create a new lvol and then mount it with a new name like /crypto.

But without system details, the choice to use sam or smh, or how to create or modify lvols requires more details.

Al last, I do that...

Last friday the situation was so terrible, no left on the device (no on the device properly, but inside the LV), so I had 36Gb free, and a HD entirely *free*! So that, I used the interface available at the SAM sysadmin software. My fear was/is I can't waste my time with admins OS tasks (like reinstall the HP-UX), and so lost my focus. At last, I used it, and with sucess!

I don't need large storage, but CPUs. I just need a normal directories spaces: "/home" dir to put my docs and code, a "/usr/local" to install gcc/glib and lot of libraries to my research, and the second HD ("vg01", just now) to backup or mirror, or to remains standing by to new needs... The SAM interface is so usable and quick, no problems. :-)

You mentioned backup or mirror...

Do you have a tape drive for backup?

If not, a copy of the first disk is not useable in vg01 -- the copy must be bootable and this will require the optional software Mirror/UX and a removal of any VG on the second disk. Be sure you have a way to backup regularly so oyou don't lose your work.

Like any computer, the admin tasks are not a waste of time. Without a proper setup, you could lose everything.

Yes, I have a HP storageworks tape drive, it is not the state of art of the storage devices, but...
I also use another server, a Fedora Linux box, I mount a NFS Linux space disk to share and store my archives.

Yes, sure! You're right. In my govt. office I have a sysadmin to complain ;-), but in my home/offime I'm the user and the sysadmin...
