boot itanium to an ignite tape, tape drive not in boot list

I made an ignite tape, that I wish to boot from, using make_tape_recovery on a rx7620 itanium with local ultrium lto3 with no problems.

When I interrupt the autoboot, I get the EFI boot manager menu and the tape drive is not in the list. I went into the EFI Shell and ran a search all and it shows up - Pun3, Lun0. However it does not show up in the device mapping table when you do a Shell>map.

I searched the forums and found that you guys often said to interrupt autoboot and I would get a menu like:
Main Menu: Enter command or menu > sea IPL
and I could do a search here and boot from the tape drive when it was listed, but I can't seem to get this type of prompt. Some of you guys had links to solutions that are now broken.

The SEA IPL command applies to HP9000 servers only, not your Integrity.

We need to check if your systems firmware already supports direct boot from tape.

If you do this from EFI you should see the tape:

Shell> reconnect -r

Itaniums have a set up program and the tape device must be set up as a boot device.

It would be better to post the COMPLETE output, but anyway, you have only version 2.0.

With this version you cannot directly boot from tape.

You need to use the two-step-recovery (boot from install CD, restore image from tape.

I find that interesting because this system was configured back in 2005 by HP and the Disaster Recovery instructions I have left over tell me to boot from a tape. - Granted the system has had it's OS reinstalled since then and this is a different tape device but the firmware should be the same.

If I do the boot from install cd option-
I would:
1. boot from the original OS install disk
2. choose Install HP-UX
3. choose Media only installation
4. choose Guided Installation
5. choose Boot from CD/DVD, Recover from Tape
6. then select my tape drive

If that sounds correct to you guys, what do i do after that, because that is where my directions end and I will lose a bunch of work if i write over my current install with what is on the dvd instead of what is on the tape?

The two-step recovery:

boot from install media, select

-> Install HP-UX -> select Advanced Installation -> Recovery tape -> GO!

Consider to update the firmware!
Ask HP for support if needed.

Ok, I am going to try your two step process.

I just talked to an x-employee and he has seen this machine boot from a tape - he says it might need the .efi driver in the right location since the drive shows up as bootable in one location but not in another. I have no idea where to get a .efi file that would work to try to import. There is a menu option to load one though.

I will try to update the firmware as well.

Booting from the install cd and running the restore works ok.

It does not completely solve my problem but now I have more time to work on it.
