Ignite is very much depending on functions like FSF... If you have problems with those, ignite won't work.

1) try using a cleaning tape to clean the tapedevice. That might help
2) use a new tape.
3) rewind the tape before starting ignite.

Also: what kind of tapedrive are you using? Ignite is not supported on all kinds...

Hi,

I hope that you can help me. I have done several backups with make_tape_recovery, in differents tape's and with different's content (last of them, was a full backup, entire backup of all my vg), but all fails when I try restore it.

This is the log:

---------------------------------------------
(...)
x ./monitor_bpr, 20480 bytes, 40 tape blocks
* Download_mini-system: Complete
* Loading_software: Begin
WARNING: Positioning tape failed: I/O error (errno = 5).
ERROR: directory checksum error
* Installing boot area on disk.
* Enabling swap areas.
* Backing up LVM configuration for "vg00".
* Backing up LVM configuration for "vg01".
* Processing the archive source (Recovery Archive).
* Fri Aug 13 07:48:01 EDT 2010: Starting archive load of the source
(Recovery Archive).
* Positioning the tape (/dev/rmt/0mn).
fsf 1 failed: I/O error
ERROR: run_cmd(/usr/bin/mt -t /dev/rmt/0mn fsf 1)
ERROR: Cannot move the tape forward. Cannot extract the OS archive.

The configuration process has incurred an error, would you like
to push a shell for debugging purposes? (y/[n]):
---------------------------------------------

As you can see, the problem have relationship with the tape positioning.

I always have had problems with commands as mt when I use rew or fsf options in my daily HP-UX use, receiving I/O errors.

I think that Ignite backup need use this functions and this is the cause of my problem.

Anybody can help me?

Thank you very much,
regards

When you say:

"3) rewind the tape before starting ignite."

Do you refer before made a backup or before restore it?

Thank to everybody.

Finally, the problem was the Tape Array unit.

The sequence that I done:

1.- Try two clean tape
2.- Try new tapes
3.- Change the tape unit for a new tape unit
4.- Change the tape array chasis (keeping the old SCSI cabel, SCSI terminator and power supply).

This last step, fixed the problem.
