Dear Sirs,

I am still baffled about IGNITE. I work in a financial institute and we have several rx 7620 with HP 11.23 installed on them.

One server has the Banking Software (GLOBUS T24)on SAN and another server has the database (ORACLE)on SAN.

I want to take ignite backup,and from the little research i made,taking ignite backup for vg00 alone works best than including other volume groups.

I want to know whether if i recover vg00 from the ignite tape would i have to install the banking software and the database before restoring the data i backed up with data protector.

Hi,
In your case you can take 2 or 3 copy of Ignite backup

If possible then try to restore into a test box to check your backup copies.

That depends. Where do the banking software and the database (software) reside now? If installed in /opt as most software is, then they should be recovered along with the rest of vg00. If the software or the data resides outside of vg00, then it's a matter of re-importing the vg that they reside on (assuming that you don't have a SAN failure also). That involves setting up appropriate definitions for LVM and running vgimport:

mkdir /dev/vg01
mknod /dev/vg01/group c 64 0x010000
vgimport -s -m /tmp/vg01map /dev/vg01

The map file would need to have been previously created by the vgexport command (vgexport -p -s -m /tmp/vg01map /dev/vg01) and stored someplace in vg00 so it is recovered along with the rest (/tmp is probably not a good place for long term storage!).

Hi,

As I was adviced: Ignite's main purpose stays - Recovery; not designed as a backup solution (though it can be done)

Data protector is the backup solution for the applications.

Hi Pete !

I now get the picture. Both the application and database reside on EVA 4000 SAN. But i thought when you "vgexport" the exported VG vanishes from the server.

If i got you right it means this vgexport must be executed before the server crashes. If not those vg(s) cannot be vgimport.

The vgexport command I showed uses the -p switch to "preview" the export process. It doesn't actually do the export but it does create the map file for you.

I have to admit that, if I'd checked your profile and seen your point assignment record (0 of 72), I would probably not have wasted my time trying to help you.

If the Banking software is installed in vg00 , it will comeup with ignite restore, becuase ignite backups up and restores everything of vg00 .

Check the Banking software installation log files for:
1. where the software installed. 2. where the data stored.
- Where the software is installed. /usr /var /home /opt (These all are vg00) and good.
- if it is installed on a non vg00 Volume Group, then it won't be avaialble after ignite restore.

To completely restore it consider the : Banking Software Installation path and its all data paths are available after ignite restore and post restore work.

To understand more , please provide:

# swlist -l product | grep -i
or
# cd /opt | ls -lrt |
or
# find / -type f -name "" -exec ls -l {} \;

- Also:
# vgdisplay -v | grep -e "VG Name" -e "VG Size"
# uname -a ; swlist -l product | grep -i ignite

Shalom,

Basically, the backup process is this:

vg00 the boot volume group, should be backed up with Ignite.

Everything else should be backed up with DP if that is your chosen tool.

In a recovery, you will first restore the Ignite image, and then include the DP restore.

What is important is that DP client be installed into vg00 so the next step in recovery is possible. In this scenario no software would have to be reinstalled.
