topic Ignite a new server to a single disk preserving one of the old root disks. in Operating System - HP-UX

I have an Ignite tape from a mirrored system, 11.11 N4000. I want to Ignite another server from that tape, but I only want to use a single drive.

The plan is to upgrade an 11.0 server on one of the root disks and import the other disk as another VG to move the system specific files back into place.

I believe this plan is possible and already have the Ignite tape at the remote site; however, the Ignite menus are somewhat confusing. I need to know how I can specify which single disk the new 11.11 image is laid down on. Being that the tape was taken from a production 11.11 system, it was not in that CUs best interest to reduce the VG to a single drive before running the Ignite tape.

Hi:

Choose Instal HP-UX/Media Only and toggle the advanced installation mode when you launch Ignite.

On the "Filesystems" tab, choose "Add/Remove Disks". De-select the disks you don't want to use and specify the single disk of your choice on which to construct vg00.

Regards!

...JRF...

In fact, an ignite restore writes only to 1 disk. You have to mirror by yourself, ignite doesn't. To reduce the chance to make mistakes, you may remove one disk while installing and set up.

Removing the disk is not an option. This install is being done remote.

Torsen,
Ignite does install the lvols on one disk, however it will pvcreate any of the disks that are specified as part of VG00. If one disk is not present it will choose the first available disk an pvcreate it as part of VG00.

James,
Will that keep the disk from being pvcreat'ed?
Assuming the drive id big enough for the image, Ignite will only use one drive. Use the advanced options to customize the install. (mirroring is not an option - must be done after the fact)

Be aware of two things from experience -
Ignite will probably give the new system the old systems name and IP address - you may have to interrupt the initial boot and change them in order to avoid conflict with the original system

Any additional VG's on the original system will be created on the new system. Do a vgexport on them to gid rid of them.

Remove is the option to clear any doubt ;-)

If you interact with the installation screen, you can select the target disk - this is leaving other disks unchanged.

You can modify the complete vg configuration here.

If the disk is not included as part of VG00, then it will not be touched.

You will just need to verify that only the disk you want to install on is set to be part of VG00.
