Hi, Kuls

If it is a new system you'll have to set up your LAN console first from your Serial port console. You can connect to the console with any terminal emulation and a straight serial cable. The settings are as follows:

Speed: 9600 bps
Parity: 8/None
Flow control: Transmit:None;Receive:Xon/Xoff

If possible, set terminal emulation to:
HP 70092 / HP 70096

Once there, type CTRL+B to access GSP. Then, LC for LAN console configuration (parameters are of your own: IP, netmask, Gateway...)

When you finish these steps you can, connect to your LAN console with the crossover cable, by telneting to it.

Best regards,

Xavier.

Hi
The First Option is to connect through a cross cable , pls check that the cable has 2&6, 1&3 codes shuffeled. and try pinging the server from your laptop & viceversa.
The second option is to boot the N class from the isl by changing the display options and connect your laptop's USb port to the console O/p ot he Server, this 'll help you out to configure the server.
thanx& regards
Asif Ayaz

As already mentioned a crossover cable will allow you to talk to your HP box. Depending on how well autonegotiate works you should get a link light on both ends right away. If you don't, you may have to set the speed on each end to 10 hd or 100 fD whichever is common to both boxes.

However, unless the HP is set up to do DHCP you will have to assign a valid IP in order for it to actually work. A valid IP would be one on the same subnet as already assigned to the HP's NIC. Say the HP is 192.168.1.1 with mask 255.255.255.0 then you can make the laptop 192.168.1.2 with the same mask - you won't need a default gateway. This should allow you to ping the HP.

from a DOS window: ping 192.168.1.1
If you see some replies then that's working.

Normally the next step is to telnet into the box. In order for you to do this the HP must be listening on port 23 and you must have a valid login on the box.

from the DOS window: telnet 192.168.1.1
if it's set up right you will be asked for a login and password.

That's as far as I can take you. I mostly just do networking. Don't even know what a Lan Console is.

Ron

Forget the crossover cable. I just reread your post and realized you do not have an OS so networking will not work. If the idea of using the USB doesn't work then you are probably hosed. I know some HP boxes will let you talk to them via the serial port but it seems like you have to do something first before that works.

Ron

I find using hyperterminal from my laptop and a serial connection directly into the console port works fine. Well, it's not a serial cable.

I use a cisco console cable, and connect one end to my serial port on the laptop, the other end to the console port (not lan console) on the N-class.

Works for me.

Hi,

Since you are telling us that you don't have OS. your lan console wouldn't work unless the OS installed. At this moment you can access the machine using hyperterminal
Hello

You can very well connect your HP machine to laptop with a cross cable. It is not necessary that hp system should have OS installed.

What Ron Kinner said is absolutely right. By default LAN console interface is configured from hp itself.

So if you can have IP address configured in the same subnet for Laptop you can do telnet on LAN console IP you will get a login prompt.

Another option is through hyper terminal. You will have to connect a serial cable between HPCONSOLE port and Laptop serial port. By this you will get hp console on your hyper terminal. After that you can go to GSP (guardian service provider) by typing cntrl+b keys and you can configure your LAN console ip address, subnet and user for accessing LAN console.

Rgds

Manoj
