Hi All,

We have one rp8420 with 4 npars. O.S level is 11i v2. No tape drives are attached to the servers.

We plan to use one of the NPARS (server) as Ignite server and do the following.

Create Ignite image of all the 4 NPARS (Servers) using make_net_recovery and store the images.

Backup these images into DVD using Ignite server's DVD drive

Take these images to recover into a remote system

Recover the images into a remote servers(rp8420) using DVD drives in the remote system.

We do not DAT tape drives in either of the envirionment.

Does this work?

Appreciate any helpful tips and documents

Thanks
Rajim

Yes, it is possible. See Chapter 10 of the Ignite Administration Guide:

http://www.docs.hp.com/en/B2355-90997/ch10.html

Pete

How do plan to initially restore the ignite server npar?

Once you have restored it, then the dvd solution will work.

I would suggest a making a bootable ignite dvd for it

see the following link for further info
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/questionanswer.do?threadId=981980

Hi DCE,

I am planning to create images using make_net_recovery. I will then burn into DVD these images.

Refresh the remote server using these DVD images.

Do you see any problems with this procedure?

Thanks
Rajim
In order for the make_net_recovery to work, you need to have an ignite server running. You need to have the information stored on the ignite server itself, not the dvd. (it can be done, but then you are mounting the dvd on the /var/opt/ignite file system

My suggestion:
make a bootable ignite dvd for the npar with the ignite server You should be able to include the make_net_recovery info for the other npars on the dvd as well, so that when the first npar is recovered, it also restores the make_net info for the three other npars.

to recap:
perform make_net recovery of the the three client npars

perform make tape_recovery to dvd of the ignite server npar (including the make_net_recovery info from the three other npars)

restore the ignite npar from the bootable dvd

restore the client npars from the restored ignte server
Hi DCE,

What I understand is we can use make_tape_rcovery to DVD drive in the ignite server to create IGNITE image. I do not need a tape drive to use make_tape_recovery.

Am I correct?

In that case I can install IGNITE-UX in all the NPARS and create make_tape_recovery into DVD.

Then use this DVD to build the remote system. Will this work?

Thanks.
Raji

Hi DCE,

What I understand is we can use make_tape_rcovery to DVD drive in the ignite server to create IGNITE image. I do not need a tape drive to use make_tape_recovery.

Am I correct?

Yes

In that case I can install IGNITE-UX in all the NPARS and create make_tape_recovery into DVD.

Yes, as long as each npar has access to a local dvd. Beware - in this case each npar requires its own dvd

Then use this DVD to build the remote system. Will this work?

Yes

But as I stated earlier, it is easier (and quicker) to perform a make_net_backup for the three client npars to the ignite npar, and make just one ignite dvd for ignite npar that includes the /var/opt/ignite info for the three other npars. That way you are only performing one restore from the (slow)dvd that writes out all of the info for all servers. Once that is done, you can do a parallel ignite restore to the three other servers at the same time.
