How to upgrade Ignite

If I have an ingnite server, and all my other systems run make_net_recovery to it, what is the process to go from 5.4.50 to 6.1.144 on all servers.

Do I have to uninstall and then install, and re-setup my OS depot. Or can I simply swinstall the 6.1.144 version and everything be ok.

swinstall alone should be OK.
Make a recovery tape on each server after upgrade.

Hi Charles,

it's like Fred said.
swinstall on the ignite server.

First thing Ignite does when making a net_recovery is updating the recovery software on the client.

So after the swinstall simply create a new net_recovery for all your systems.

I ALWAYS swremove the old version and then swinstall the new version. Once or twice I have just done a swinstall and I have had problems with program version conflicts.

The swremove should not effect your OS depot.

I did not always swremove the old Ignite and got into trouble several times, ending up with multiple versions installed.

Follow Patrick's guidelines and make sure you make copies of important configuration files such as INDEX so you don't have to configure your Ignite Server from scratch.

Patrick - Were you talking about doing swinstall on the server only *or* the server and all the clients?

Bart - Upgrade the server, and when you do the first make_net_recovery on the client the new software will be downloaded and upgraded to the client? What will show up if I do a swlist?

We don't use make_net_recovery here, so I really can't comment on how an upgrade would effect the clients. It *should* automatically install the new software on the clients.

SEP - OK if I follow Pete's advice and upgrade the ignite server, saving the INDEX file, when I run the first make_net_recovery from the client "the new software will be downloaded and upgraded to the client? What will show up if I do a swlist?"

Do an swremove on the older Ignite version.

When I install the newer version on top of the older version, I have seen the swlist show 2 versions of Ignite being installed.

This is why I remove the older Ignite package first.

Then I can swlist and verify that the Ignite is gone.

Then I can swinstall.

If I install the newer version and then swremove the older version, both versions have gone away.

i always prefer swremove old version ignite
and then;
swinstall new version of ignite...
And up to now,i have not seen any problem

every time you do create a network recovery archive, the ignite server checks the ignite version on the client and upgrades it if needed.

swlist on the client shows these filesets:

But to my surprise it also shows two filesets of the ignite version that were installed when I upgraded from 11.00 to 11.11:
# Ignite-UX B.5.4.50 HP-UX System Installation Services
Ignite-UX.BOOT-KERNEL-PA B.5.4.50 Installation Boot Kernel for S700/S800 clients

I'd do an swremove / swinstall on your ignite server.
For the ignite clients I'd do an swremove and then create a new network recovery archive.
