Installing rx8640, 1nPar and 6vPars.

Surprise, my manager said. :)

"Do you know that rx8640 we have bought back in jan09? - They need 3 of the vPars by next week."

It seems that I have some weekend work to look forward to, but I have not had the change to readup on everything on the rx server, and nPar/vPar installation.

Here is some of the primary features in our environment.

Highlights:
- We have a centralized Ignite server for backup and installations. (BaseOE and Appl software is here)
- The rx8640 server has just been cabled today, with 12x NIC and 12x FC.
- Each vPar should have 2x NIC and 2x FC.
- The vg00 is to be located on the SAN, and storage has been allocated, using the correct FC interfaces. (SAN=XP24000)
- The rx8640 server has a total of 16CPU and 256GB Ram.
- Each vPar should have a minimum of 2CPU and 8GB Ram. The rest of the CPU/MEM is to be dynamicly allocated later.

Here is my request:
- Can you give me some refs. is which documentation that i need to read and follow?
- Can you give me some headline refs. in which tasks that i need to take/perform and in which order?

Any help is appreciated. :)

Dear Friend

npar is hardware level partition and vpar is software level partion.
i mean
Vpars can go on an Npar.

You are at a critical point, you need to design the infrastructure carefully. I suggest you to understand vpar/npar technologies, you can find much of the things in docs.hp.com.

You have 4 cells server, it means you can create up to 4 npars. Npars and vpars diffrent characteristics in terms of availability/resource moving capabilities etc. Well examine your application needs and understand the HP's technologies, so you can design it well...

get ready your ignite server that it can install the desired OS on the VPARS.

install the NPAR first using the Ignite server( this shall beconme your first VPAR)

from the EFI shell of the NPAR choose the networkboot from the ignite server.

create the VPARs as desired assigning the cpu, mem and IO resources and boot paths.

once created boot the NPAR in VPARS mode.

with the first VPAR booted, install using the ignite server the VPARs that you have created.
#vparboot -I -p

this boots the VPAR in an installation mode to the Ignite server.

You already know the links to the docs now.

Some hints:

- Add vPars software to your ignite. You need to install OS and vPars at the same time.

- install the OS on the nPar and run
# ioscan -fnCba
# ioscan -fnCdisk
# olrad -q
and keep the record.

- make a drawing with slots and H/w pathes
- based on this, create your vPars and install the OS on them

BTW, the statement

"...You have 4 cells server, it means you can create up to 4 npars..."

is not entirely true. You need an I/O extender (SEU) in order to have enough I/O for 4 nPars. Depending on your hardware resources you can create up to 8 vPars in each nPar.

Thanks all, for your help.

I've created 1 nPar, and 6 vPars already, and it has been running for almost 10 days now. :)

I started out with the hardware design, and used the manual as ref. for the specific hardware paths. I put the hardware design on paper, for easy and quick guidance.

Then I installed the server (nPar) and started everything as the documentation describes. And I used an Ignite server for the installation of the rest, of the vPars.
