While trying out online migration of IVM 4.1 guest from one host to another, i am getting the following error:

>>

[root@host1]hpvmmigrate -o -P ivm1 -h host2

hpvmmigrate: Connected to target host using 'host2'

hpvmmigrate: /dev/vx/rdsk/ivmdg1/ivmvol1 cannot be migrated.

hpvmmigrate: Online migration requires only disk or null backing stores.

>>>
The OS boot disk is created using vxvm volume.
Have checked that the two hosts have the all luns physically shared between them.
Could anyone please advise about the above error?
IMHO the reason is in this message:

"hpvmmigrate: Online migration requires only disk or null backing stores"

Check your backing stores.

From the manual:

"Only whole disk backing storage consisting of SAN LUNs, and ejected file-backed DVDs, are
supported for guest storage if you plan to migrate the guest online. File and logical volume
backing storage are not supported for online guest migration."

10.3.4 Restrictions and Limitations of Online VM Migration

It will be helpful if you could clarify what is "whole disk backing storage consisting of SAN luns"?

Does this imply we cannot use logical volumes for guest os's bootdisk? Or does it mean we can use a logical volume that must span across a single (whole) disk?

Thanks!
You need to assign a "raw" disk to the guest, not a file, not a lvol.
