Problems installing HP-UX 11.0

On a HP C240 with a new disk, when trying to install the OS from CD, I get the following message when the boot process is scanning for disk devices:

Querying disk device 8/0/19.0.6.0 : Disk at 8/0/19.0.6.0 (IBM_DHRS) reports a size of zero.

There are two disks in the system (identical) and they both report the same message. Any hints as to how to get the system to recognize them?

Hi Eric,

Either the disks you are using are not supported, i.e. they could be third party disks. If that is not the case, the disks are faulty, but how two of them can be faulty at the same time is a question mark.

If you are using third party disk, you should look into their replacements with an hp supported disk.

As Sanjay says or might be that disk needs setup like we have to use Simplicity software to configure disk on linux or else linux reports same error.

IBM does not list a drive for DHRS, but they do have a DRHS drive. Do you have an actual model number, not that that will help much, because as Sanjay said, it doesn't appear to be listed as a supported disk drive on either HP's or IBM's web sites. This doesn't mean you can't get it to work though, but you need to somehow get that drive into the /etc/disktab file.

Hi,

As harry suggests, you can try with an entry in the disktab. But if i remeber correctly, ux 11.0 should not need a disktab entry. I remeber i was required to do so when i was using 9.04 and was adding some 4GB/9GB disk.

Since this is a fresh installation you are trying to do on the disk, you have no choice but to use a disk which is supported by hp.

Grr.. that's one of the only things that ticks me off about HP is their disk drives.

They charge you 5 times what the disk really costs and seemed to have figured out a way to take an open standard (SCSI) and make sure that you can only use their stuff on it.

Hi Eric,

HP does support IBM disks on the systems. Do you have the model number of the disk ? R u sure that the disk is okay ?

Is this an additional disk installed by you OR provided by HP ?

Do you have a Ultra2Wide SCSI controller card on the system ? Is the SCSI termination proper ?

It's terminated.

My understanding is that LVD devices will fall back to single ended if an LVD controller is present.

The system does see the drive (i.e. diskinfo /dev/rdsk/c0t5d0 reports some stuff, but the size it reports is zero)

Hi Eric,

The system will identify the disk, but the tech specs from IBM ( see below ) says the interface should be U2W SCSI. May be this could be your problem. For clarification, you can connect this disk to a new server/workstation which has a U2W SCSI interface.

I've got 2 IBM drives in my C200 (DDRS-39130WS and DDRS-34560WS) and they have been working like a charm for about 3 years.

I think what your problem is, is that you are using LVD drives on an HVD (Fast Wide Differential) SCSI bus. The 2 don't work together well.

Hi Eric,
If you don't have another system and by change if you have single to wide scsi converter you can use that.

I have used that converter on B132 for wide scsi disk.

And don't worry about simplicity it is third party product for high end configuration. I was just throughing some ideas. Sorry about that.
