We're trying to do a remote login using an XDMCP query to a HPux 10.2 workstation. The idea is to share the workstation among many users, who can use Hummingbird Exceed or other X-client to log in and get the full CDE desktop.

-Here's what happens:-

The XDMCP query succeeds, giving the remote X-client the CDE login window. The font server seems to be working fine, as there are no errors and the fonts look identical to the console login screen. The user can then login, which also works fine. The login is validated, and the login screen disappears.

Then - nothing. The screen stays blank. It does not crash back to the login window, but the windows manager does not come up either. I have no session error messages to work with either.

Hi,

It seems that your concept is correct, we go from PC's to a designated server not a workstation. Have you tried another workstattion or server to bounce your CDE session from ?

Mike: I have tried from both a Win2K client via hummingbird and a Solaris Sparc 5 system. Both systems have the same end result.
That is why I am thinking it is something on the HPUX-server side.

-Scott

Scott,

It seems that there is a problem on the server side. Is there another server you could try and run the CDE session from? i.e. try to attach from your PC to another HPUX workstation or server? What I'm suggesting is to try to see if there are any differences between what this server may do and your workstation. If it works, look at the patches and the current filesets that are loaded on the machine(s)

Michael

Hi,

1)Run the Exceed's Xconfig and then select and run Trouble shooting option. Turn on all kind of logging options.Reset the Xserver to make changes into effect. Try to login and see the "exceed.log" file for any error messages that will help you to identify the problem at PC level.

2)From the workstation,

make sure your workstation's default router is set in /etc/rc.config.d/netconf.

3)Check the permission of the file /etc/hosts it should have atleast read permission grant to others.

4)In sam check the name service swith order under networking and communications menu for the passwd and hosts information their first source should be /etc/passwd and /etc/hosts respectively if you are not using dns and nis.

5)run "dr_dt" to determine any issues in X windows of your HP workstation.

6)check the "/usr/dt/config/Xaccess" and
"/etc/dt/config/Xaccess" files for it's display configuation settings.

7)check the Xerrors file in your worksation "cat /var/dt/Xerrors | pg "

-Vija

I'll point out that CDE is very intolerant of problems/issues with .profile. Even if telnet and/or rlogin work for that user, give them a clean .profile and try again.

Chris

I'd go with Chris's suggestion .. for now X conectivity etc doesn't seem to be the problem here .... check the permissions / that the rpcbind process is running on the system, move out the way a users $HOME/.dt directory & their .profile.

Is root affected by this ? Try dr_dt , any errors in the syslog.log ? add set- x to the users .dtprofile and try to login then check $HOME/.dt/startlog.

Try changing the users shell ?

just some thoughts ....
