Filesystem question

I am installing several new C3600 workstations, and plan on getting Online JFS as I understand it provides the best flexibility and functionality.

However, I would like to know if there are any situations(if any) you would choose HFS, JFS over Online JFS (that is, are there any special situations where HFS or JFS would be a better choice versus Online JFS).

Hi

there is no point in buying on-line JFS if your system is unlikely to need to change filesystem requirements size !!

if you have asystem which can have down time to make changes then there is the cost factor of on-line JFS

Online JFS is nice as it gives you several enhancements:
* Resizing of file systems and volumes whilst on-line
* Compressing of directory sizes (for directories which have lots of files created and deleted in)
* ACLs

Unfortunately It costs a lot. Unless you need the above then I would live without it.

Hi Brian,

Online JFS has some features which are not provided by other file systems:

- decreasing the size of file systems
- online defragmentation

But it has to be said, that online JFS is very expensive! Do you really need these features???

Vxfs is the base version of online JFS, it is a journaleng file system too, only without the extentions i mentioned avove. This is the correct choice for your systems in most cases! And: no extra money to pay for it....

One exeption on HP-UX- computers:

you MUST put your /stand- filesystem into a HFS- filesystem, otherwise your system will not run. HFS is a simple, fast file system with less overhead, but without intent logging and transactions.

Thanks for the feedback so far, it is exactly what I was looking for. I did not realize that Online JFS was really expensive (can anyone give me a cost figure?), I have not gotten a price for it yet. I was considering Online JFS merely for the convenience that you do not need to brind a filesystem down to perform maintenance, but I need to evaluate how much I want that "convenience".

The pricing information is at the bottom of the page. The price depends on what "tier" the C3600 workstations fall under. I would imagine that they are Tier1, but I don't know that for a fact. If that is true, the you are looking at $3,666 per workstation. If you have a good relationship with you VAR, then you may get a discount off of that price. Check with whomever you buy your stuff from for what you would actually pay.
