HP-UX 11.0 Installation error - URGENT ! ! !

Hi all,

Cold Installing HP-UX 11.0 (32 bit) on a K210 system, from the December 2001 media. Installation completed now ( Core OS CD + Support CD ) and while restarting gave panic error.

First time it gave me error - Cannot activate vg00 error, error accessing VGDA, panic.

I tried 'hpux -lm', but still give error - "Error in vn_create for /dev/ip, panic: cannot create /dev/ip" " WARN E000"

Any idea ?

Sounds like LVM header corruption to me, the boot process (for an LVM boot disk) make use of BDRA LVM header info to find the kernel. If BDRA is messed-up or corrupt, this is the kind of error you'll see.
I'm guessing you got bad sector in your disk where BDRA reside.

Can you try installing to a different disk? I agree with S.K. Chan that it sounds like your boot disk, while not completely bad, is on its way out. If you can ever get the machine booted, try a dd of the disk and see if it reports an error.

It definately looks like disk not being initalised .Bcoz either :

1. Media is bad.
2. Disk is not seated properly (Power Connector , Signal cable , Terminator if applicable).

Do u have another disk to try to ?

Hi,

More information:

While booting I found FLT B800. I just read some of the threads which says about this error.

Do you think that the patch installation along with Core OS installation causing a problem ?
I found another issue in one of the thread about the CD drive, but I have a new one !

This is actually an upgrade ( cold install ) from 10.20 to 11.0. I still have the old root mirrored HDD and will try booting from that and check the HDD.

Any idea or suggestions ?

Hi,

Again, I booted from the old mirror hard disk and tried 'dd' on the disk. It gave a read I/O error ! I am going to replace the disk now and try another install. I will update if the problem will be solved !

Since you got an error on that drive with dd, I would say that once you replace the disk your installation and boot will probably succeed.

Just bad timing that the disk goes bad when your doing an install.

Hi All,

Thanks for all your help.

The problem is solved now:

1) Replaced the disk
2) Tested new disk with 'dd' command
3) Installed the OS ( OS + Support Plus CD )

Now system working fine ..
