Hi all,

Please let me know what do we need to consider or what steps we need to take to consolidate systems or to move one applicaton to another system where there is nother one running.

on the purely software side (and not performance - identical hardware etc..)
start with disk space: bdf

Then check the software on both: swlist

After that read any release notes for the software and follow their upgrade / transition guides.

Hi Roger,

Look at the dependancies of each application. Check if they can co-exist on the same system. Look at their resource requirements and their prerequisites and things like that.

Thank you two for the response.

Ok, let me ask you a specific question. Other than the analysis of the system resources, what about the forcase of cpu, and memory utilization? I have Perfview and measureware, however, how can I predict what system capacity is going to look like once I consolidate two different projcets together?

In this regard I want to mention one thing that you should take such a Server which is having a definite upgrade path. You can look through the tpm scores for each server you having.

Suppose if you are having two K class servers with 2 CPU each and 2 GB of RAM. In this scenario I would have gone for L Class with 2 550/440 MHz CPU and 4 GB of RAM since the cost of RAM is too less now. And after transfer if you see the system is slow you can always go for 4 CPU and 16GB of RAM.

If you are consolidating any K580 or T Class, I would suggest you to go for N Class with two CPU and 4GB RAM initialy and upgrade later if required.

The project is running on k200 now, and we are going to move it to K400, so it LOOKS no problem, but still I want to know exactly what cpu and memory utilization appear to be. You can't just simply add one on k200 and another on k400 together. Right?

You are right.

Atleast you look at the K400 how much cpu and memory utilisations are, through glance. If you see the K400 Server is fully utilised then you have to upgrade the Server and if it doesnt have room to upgrade , you are in trouble.

Just look at the I/O also. You may consider to add the existing disk of K200 through separate SCSI Controller.

We still want to know the clear picture on cpu and memroy utililzation, and we don't want the word like SHOULD BE, LOOKS LIKE, since that would be too late if we find any problems after we move it over.

Based on tools we have now(perfview, measureware, and glance+), Is there any way we can figure out if the K400 system can handle these two project together?

Please post the utilsation of your K400 and K200 through GlancePlus . We need to look at the CPU Utilisation and Memory Utilisation and the swap utilisation.

You are probably not getting many responses back to your question because there are so many variables, *and* opinions on how to correctly scale applications to specific servers. TPM calculations can be misleading if the applications fight for specific resources, whether those resources be physical memory or software libraries.

Most larger companies hire a consultant (or utilize their HP ASE) to make this type judgement call, and hold them liable if the call is wrong.
