Check /usr/contrtib/X11/bin/dr_dt.
Check the ERRORS and WARNING that are the output.

Is the DISPLAY set correctly? Are you able to resolve this host? Do the nslookup and see if that comes back clean. Need to be able to resolve correctly for CDE to function. Are you using DNS of the hosts file?

Start with the dr_dt and go from there.

Can you, please give more details about your "try to use NIS". Did you enable NIS? How? Usualy, root is not part of nis map, is locally. If you want to login as a regular user via nis, you had to configure your system as a nis client.
Is nis tried only one event happened since root can not login from the GUI console? If you try to login from console by-passing GUI, can you do it?
More details are required.

On HPUX 11 ensure that after you add nsswitch.conf etc. and enable NIS client that you stop and restart the pwgrd daemon.

/sbin/init.d/pwgr stop ; /sbin/init.d/pwgr start

Regards,
Vikas

Thanks for reply. I run the dr_dt and found a error which says my address of hostname is not same as the nslookup's result. I changed the name in the name server. now it works. But still there are some warnings like following:
WARNING: /usr/dt/bin/xmbind does not exist. It needs
to be on the system in order for HP CDE to run properly.
There may have been a problem at installation. You
can either reinstall HP CDE or get a copy of the file
from another compatible system.

WARNING: /usr/dt/bin/suid_exec does not exist. It needs
to be on the system in order for HP CDE to run properly.
There may have been a problem at installation. But how to reinstall HP CDE?

The WARNINGS sometimes do not prevent CDE from functioning. Example, I have the suid_exec WARNING all the time but really do not do much about it. Try running CDE and see if it functions.

I believe that you just stated that all is well.
Is this correct?
Be aware that NIS stores the .dt files wherever the default user HOME directory is.
root is stired on each station IF, toy make the stationa CLIENT AFTER you build the NIS .
You to to export the HOME directory from the NIS Server IF, you want to have ONE point of entrance to the system.
You also need to change /etc/group and /etc/passwd last lines AFTER the root entry.
