error regarding rdist

hello all,

when I m trying to use rdist from Linux to HP-UX11i, it complained

[root@lnx100 sbin]# rdist -f /usr/local/sbin/rdistfile.hp100
hp100: updating host hp100
sh: rdistd: not found.
hp100: LOCAL ERROR: Unexpected input from server: "".
hp100: updating of hp100 finished

syslog on Linux host says
Sep 2 14:15:38 lx105 rdist[26711]: hp201: LOCAL ERROR: Unexpected input from se
rver: "".

no error message appreared on hp-ux 11i side,
ssh, rsh, rlogin enabled on HP-UX, have .rhosts with Linux hostname.

while I can do the rdist between two Linux hosts, it seemed hp-ux does not have rdistd, how can I get it installed if this is the case.

First of all rdist is part of InternetSrvcs.INETSVCS-RUN

Confirm it on the HPUX box with swlist.

Secondly /usr/bin/rdist has to be in the shells path that is calling the rdisk so it looks like /usr/bin/ has to be in the root's path on the HPUX box. It probably is in root's path but there is no rdistd that I am aware of with HPUX. You may have a version mismatch between your Linux and HPUX.

# swlist -R | grep InternetSrvcs.INETSVCS-RUN

# swlist -l product | grep InternetSrvcs
InternetSrvcs B.11.11 General network applications and daemons

# whereis rdist
rdist: /usr/bin/rdist /usr/share/man/man1.Z/rdist.1

on Linux box I can check the version of rdist

[root@lnx100]# rdist -V
Version 6.1.5 (RELEASE) - Protocol Version 6, Release 6.1, Patch level 5

the rdist on hp-ux11i does not have this -V option.

The rdist that ships with HP-UX is a couple decades back level and doesn't use rdistd for the server.

Go here to get a newer one:

http://hpux.cs.utah.edu/hppd/hpux/Networking/Admin/rdist-6.1.5/

Works fine on 11.11.
