topic add a network printer in Operating System - HP-UX

What's the most reliable, cleanest way to add a network printer?
I have 10 HP-UX 11 hosts on a TCP/IP network, with users and printers on different floors in a large building. Printers are connected to the TPC/IP network, and available to user PCs via their NT LAN connection.
I want to give users the ability to print from their Unix sessions as well.
I don't mind doing the work on each host, but want the cleanest and most reliable way to do this.
Past SAs have done this differently... most recently using jetadmin.
What's the best way to make these printers useful to my users

Jetadmin is the cleanest way to add the printer. You can do it through the command line also.

HPNPL E.10.18 Hewlett-Packard JetDirect Printer Installer for Unix

Sandip

If I understand correctly... jetadmin is the best way to set them up for use by unix users, and for PC users, if they are already setup for network printing, you really shouldn't have a problem either way.

GL,
C

Hi,

Jetadmin would be the best way to go. The old jetadmin has been discontinued by hp, but you can still download the same using anonymous ftp from hp software site.

ftp ftp.hp.com
username : anonymous
password : your email address
bin
cd pub/networking/software
get HP11d621.SD (for ux11.0)
get HP10d621.SD (for ux10.20)
bye

Hope this helps.

Regds
The HP Printer Installer is the JetAdmin replacement.

You can download the discontinued version of JetAdmin from the location mentioned by Sanjay -- the version is D.6.21

Either should work -- but you need to have either a JetDirect interface card installed in the printer or a JetDirect Box attached for these print utilities to communicate with the printer.

You can run the utilities either from the command line or from SAM -> Printers Plotters > Lp Spooler -> Actions -> Add Network Printer

Make sure you can ping the printer before attempting to us either utility -- if it doesn't ping, then there is a network issue that needs to get resolved before continuing.

Hope that helps.

Ross Martin

Another possibility is to add a remote printer through SAM, It works fine, but is not quite as reliable.
Good luck,
Kel

Oops,
I didn't notice you wanted printablity with PC's.
Sorry 'bout that.
Another nice possibility is SAMBA or CIFS/9000 for HP (same thing).
You get great printer and file sharing, complete with security you can customize.
www.samba.org for samba
software.hp.com for CIFS/9000
Note- samba is a built-in on all Windows platforms and is called smb.

Good luck!
Kel
