Hi Jason,

From your previous post about CIFS and 64-bit, I see that you were concerned about the open files limitation, and felt that this was fixed in 3.0 or by compiling in 64-bit.

Like Todd said - you can enter an ER for 64-bit. But this would be for CIFS on Samba 3.0, not 2.2. Samba.org is ending support life of 2.2 as of October 1st, so HP will focus all development and ERs on 3.0. So either way, Samba 3.0 would be the platform that you would run to take care of that.

Also, in your previous post you mentioned that you were on A.01.06. Have you tried testing your app on A.01.11 (2.2.9)?

Eric

Hi All,

Does anyone know did HP release a 64bit of CIFS server? I downloaded the latest CIFS server from software.hp.com and install on 64bit HPUX11.00 but it seem to be 32bit only as reported as following.

/opt/samba/bin/smbd: PA-RISC1.1 shared executable dynamically linked -not str
ipped

Correct me if i'm wrong that if application is running in 64bit it should prompt

/stand/vmunix: ELF-64 executable object file - PA-RISC 2.0 (LP64)

OR does HP release any documentation on manual build?

Hi Jason,

HP doesnt have a 64 bit version at the moment. The cifs configure_hp_options.sh checks for IA64 archetecture and compiles in +dd32 mode. HP does not have instructions in compiling it in 64 bit, either. If you would like to follow up on this with HP Labs I would suggest you open a case with the Response Center and ask them to submit an enhancement request to the HP CIFS lab for 64 bit support, I know its something that has been talked about with the cifs application.

Hope that helps some

Todd

Hi Jason,

Referring back to your previous thread, which this appears to be a follow-on of:

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=691727

You mentioned a limitation of opening 256 files that you believe is a 32-bit limitation or one that is resolved by Samba 3.0. Can you tell me more about this limitation? How did you hit it? How can you reproduce the problem? Where did you see that this problem is resolved in Samba 3.0 or by compiling for 64-bits?

Regards,

Dave

Thanks for everyone prompt response.

The reason i need 64bit CIFS is because of IBM Rational ClearCase. We're hosting our vobs in HPUX-Server and in order to access the vobs in mixed-environment, we use Samba as the medium. Although currently we do have solution solving our issue on the 256 files limitation when our developers access in Windows (eg. Visual Studio), but the drawback is performance.

The problem is, we cannot simply use any version of Samba without IBM Rational certify supported version and their only announce 2.07-2.2 are supported version for interoperability between ClearCase & Samba. That is the reason why i need 64bit CIFS (Samba 2.2) instead of the Samba 3.0
