topic DNS Problem in Operating System - HP-UX

I hate to ask windows questions on a HP-UX forum, but maybe some of you will be willing to help. I have created a small network with two servers running Windows 2003 and an itanium server running HP-UX. I have DNS and active directory service running on one of the Windows servers. I wanted to have the HP-UX connecting to the DNS, and I registered the hostname and ip address for the HP-UX server in the DNS forward lookup tables. However, whenever I go to use the set_parms addl_network command and I enter the DNS information it always comes back saying:
WARNING: This system's current hostname and address could not be verified on the name server.

Anyone want to take a shot at helping me out with this one? I have been having problems with CDE not coming up as well, and I think it is because of this problem. Thanks

The funny part is after entering the DNS server, even after getting that message, I can still ping other host names connected to the DNS server. Like if I had a host named "Server2" connected to the network and listed in the DNS server. I can "ping Server2" on the HP-UX server and it will work.

Whenever I performed nslookup, it always returns the ipaddress written in the /etc/hosts file. It doesn't get it from the DNS.

Microsoft's DNS server does not comply with industry standards as far as DNS goes. I've run into issues like this as well as extremely slow response to nslookup and DNS inquiries with past version of Windows Server.

At my private practice, I refuse to use Windows DNS.

There needs to be DNS records for the HP box on the windows 2003 server. In addition, I'd recommend a small database of DNS lookup be installed on the HP box.

You can do it with /etc/hosts or actually install BIND 9.2 and build a little database.

Something Unix does that Microsoft doesn't support is the unqualified hostnames. If /etc/hosts is setup or DNS is done right, ping server1 will work just as well as servername.your.net . I am sure that can be done with Microsoft DNS but our admins never set it up.

SEP
