Thanks Lee,

I added the -N option to the /sbin/auto_parms script and it worked perfectly.

Thanks again,

-Tim

Hello All,

On my network I have a Windows 2003 Server running as a dns/dhcp server. I would like my HP-UX 11.11 workstations to talk to it using DHCP and DNS. Only I can't seem to get it to dynamically update the hostname in the DNS tables on the server. Testing it with other windows machines works fine, and it can successfully serve addresses and works fine as a DNS server. A packet sniff on the server of the incoming DHCP request from the HP-UX machine shows that it is missing "Option 12" which is the hostname of the requesting machine, necessary for the DDNS to work.

I already installed (or tried to... it says that everything is already installed) patches PHCO_24118 and PHSS_27333

Any suggestions?

Hi,

Have you tried /etc/set_parms in your HP-UX box?

You must execute /etc/set_parms like superuser, then you can choose the option you need.

Frank.

I used set_parms to do the initial configuration (this was a fresh load) and then again later to fix some mistakes. The plain vanilla DHCP stuff works as does DNS... it's getting the client to send it's own hostname in the DHCP request that isn't functioning yet.

cheers

-Tim

Hi,

According to the man page for dhcpclient(1M), it looks like you need to find a way to pass a '-N <HOSTNAME>' flag to dhcpclient. You will probably wind up having to modify one of the rc scripts to accomplish this on boot. Test it from the commandline via 'dhcpclient -b lan0 -N ddnshostname'

See: http://docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/B2355-90691/B2355-90691.html

Hope it helps...</HOSTNAME>

you might also set the option on the NT side to "enable updates for clients that do not support Dynamic DNS"

also, you'll want to set "automatically update DHCP clent information in DNS" and "always update dns"

this can be reached by opening the DHCP MMC, right clicking the server in question, choosing properties, and choosing the DNS tab.
