The Xerror file was of the size of 2GBs ( whereas it was some 74 bytes before ). And Xserver couldn't write to /var now since there was no space left because of this. I saw the last few lines of the file and it was saying something about reaching maximum queue limit or something.

Then to see why the console is locked, I killed all our applications, but that didn't help. Then, I killed X process ( which in turn emptied the Xerror file ) and the /var directory was back to some 9% used.

Hi, this is in continuation to my last query. I need to know answers to the following questions urgently. Please help

1. I read HP10 used VUE whereas HP11 uses CDE. If so, from where can I see the major changes between the two ?
2. Is it possible that our applications ( which are quite color-hungry, and are not using their own color-map ) are making the CDE run out of colors which would keep on sending some error to Xerror file thereby eating up all the disk space ( but /var directory is 2GB !!! ) ?
3. Does Xserver's inability to write to /var directory lock the X display ( although we can still login to the machine etc )
4. Has someone seen any such problem before ?

This is the link to my last query : http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0xb5a7ba808b46d611abda0090277a778c,00.html

Thanks

In my expierence, i found many small differences, but tried to forget most of them. CDE is made to conform with
SUN and IBM.
One of the most stupiest things i remember was that the default xterm is set to dtterm instead of hpterm; which made cut&paste from and to X-applications more difficult.
But.. this is not an answer you want to hear. I never had problems with colormaps or resolustion related things.
The main differences are:
New and more customizable Front Panel
Graphical MIME-enabled mail application
Graphical Calendar
Graphical Print Queue Manager
New terminal emulator
Action and datatype syntax changes
ToolTalk messaging support
Desktop application registration

Strange that your Xserver cannot write in /var ??
And what about /var/dt/Xerrors ?

Regards,
Ceesjan

It's the Xserver that's responsible for handling the number of colours etc -> go into sam and try changing your default visual wrt the graphics card. Sam->Display->Xserver

you can check what the 10.20 system was set to by mor'ing the file /etc/X11/X0.screens

also you can allocate more or less colours to applications or the CDE desktop via CDE's style manager -> colors (located on CDE's front panel)

Hi

VUE is old hat
CDE present standard

future standard in GNOME , you might be better off spending your time exploring the differences between present and future products rather than old.

a useful thread for gnome
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0xc05d039599eed5118ff40090279cd0f9,00.html

http://www.hp.com/go/gnome

John.
