Xterms Obsolete?!

I am trying to plan a full upgrade on every HP-UX system on my network. I called HP sales and was able to find the proper models for my workstations and host. However, HP sales informed me that Envizex Xterminals are obsolete and discontinued. Xterms are a vital piece of my network, as well as, the application we are buiding on the HP-UX boxes. Does anyone know of any alternatives? My biggest concern is supporting 4 displays per workstation which we are currently doing with a 712 and 3 xterms attached using 10.20. I am looking at upgrading to B2600's with 11i. I have already been told we can't plan on keeping any of the "old" boxes, everything must be replaced. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Steve:

I happen to like the old Entria II's and they work well for me. They too are discontinued but the software will actually install on 11.11 and boot these guys. I plan to keep them as long as possible and when combined with an 18" or larger LCD monitors, these guys work well well and have a very small footprint on the desk.

If you want to purchase new X-terminals the you can try http://www.ncd.com. These work very well. My experience with PC-based X-emulators is that they almost work well.

Hello,

if you cannot get any real X-terminals any more, and do not want to have Windows-PCs for danger of users changing the configuration, you could try Linux-Live-CD-ROMs, like e.g. "DemoLinux".
Those are complete Linux-distributions containing the X-Server and whatever you might want, but all on CD, and hence cannot be altered by users. You could even include some firewall-setup and/or SNMP-agent and then *old* PCs only having a bootable CD-ROM-drive installed can used as pretty safe X-Terminals.

Burning your own "DemoLinux" CD-ROM is pretty easy ;-)

effective November 1, 1999, all Netstation and Thin Clienthardware was removed from our current price list and discontinued.

However HP is now in partnership with NCD, we both ship and support there s/w and h/w as an alternative to the enware products.

I have an NC900 on my desk about the same size as the EntriaII and am impressed with the little box.

I bought some Windows shareware called XManager for less than $50, and it works great.

HP in their cost cutting ways have axed the Xterms that they made so well.

We ended up getting a few hundred from ncd and they are almost as good. We still prefer the HP's.

NCD has also said that they may quit making them.

The PC solution is not a good one having to use Reflections X. The HP Xterms were able to be remotely diagnosed, the ncd's can't and PC's can't.

We use an X-term emulation program called Exceed from Hummingbird software. It is a great program, arrives with all kinds of great tools.

Steve,

We have thousands of xterms, both envizex I's and II's, and as they die (which isn't often) they get replaced by M$ boxes (until I work in linux boxes) with Exceed. We are also looking into the SUN "Sun-Ray" devices.

If they work, there is no need to replace them, just have a plan to implement when they do die!

I don't think that any box has a time to boot (zero to 60!) quicker than the Entria/Envizex! I could get X up in less than 5 seconds (with ffs2) I'd recommend buying them from ebay before replacing them with disk based/linux based solutions.
Not convinced by ncd yet..
