Warning, newbie alert :)

Our company has an hp-ux 11.00 server at a datacentre in the UK. This recently suffered a disk failure and the disk was replaced by an engineer and a basic OS install performed by an engineer under our support contract.

However - we've got a 4 port 10/100 NIC in the machine and there do not appear to be any drivers loaded for it (and the device is shown as unclaimed in ioscan). From reading around on here I understand that we need the A5506 drivers. From looking at our HP-UX cd set, there is a directory called 'a5506a' on Applications 1. This directory appears to be empty however! Additionally, the CD is in London and the server is around about 200 miles away!

Is it possible for me to download the necessary drivers for HP-UX 11.00 so that I can copy them up to the remote server?

ioscan output below:

# ioscan -fnC lan
Class I H/W Path Driver S/W State H/W Type Description
========================================================================
lan 0 0/0/0/0 btlan3 CLAIMED INTERFACE HP PCI 10/100Base-TX Core
/dev/diag/lan0 /dev/ether0 /dev/lan0
lan 1 0/1/3/0/4/0 btlan UNCLAIMED UNKNOWN PCI Ethernet (10110009)
lan 2 0/1/3/0/5/0 btlan UNCLAIMED UNKNOWN PCI Ethernet (10110009)
lan 3 0/1/3/0/6/0 btlan UNCLAIMED UNKNOWN PCI Ethernet (10110009)
lan 4 0/1/3/0/7/0 btlan UNCLAIMED UNKNOWN PCI Ethernet (10110009)

Thanks,
Jon.

If you have LAN/WAN connectivity and have the ability to mount that CD in an HPux drive, then yes you can remotely install the software. If not, then it's time to call someone to get the CD delivered.

live free or die
harry

Hi Jon,

It looks like you've found the right software product for your LAN cards. You'll just need to use 'swinstall' and install the A5506 product so that your remote machine will pick up the driver for those cards.

JP
Hi again,

Sorry. I didn't read your post closely enough. Harry is right.

While you are at it, you might want to install the Ignite-UX product on the machine. Ignite will allow you to make bootable operating system backups which you can use to restore a failed system and will be a huge help in a situation like this one.

Good luck!

JP
Sadly the only 2 HP-UX boxes I can access are in the datacentre up north!

I've tried to tar/gzip the cd from a Linux box here in London - is this likely to work or does the CD use an different format than iso9660? Or should I just get the CD sent up to the datacentre?

If you have local access to an HP-UX system, you could use swcopy (make sure to switch-off enforce dependencies and the like) to copy the depot to a directory on the local system, tar that up, transfer it to the system in question, and then untar and swinstall there.

Pulling the bits off the CD on a different system is likely possible, but knowing which all to grab can be something of a challenge - one I'd prefer to avoid myself.
