Need sendmail.cf example for e-mail client

Hi there,
I simply want to use sendmail as email-client.
As I'm very new to sendmail for me it is quite unclear what to put in sendmail.cf-file to simply send a message to a smtp-server.

Can anybody help me.

Any tips&tricks are appreciated.

Lothar,

Just take the default sendmail.cf, and adjust the following:

Dj$w.yourdomain ; for instance Dj$w.a.b.c.d.com

DSyoursmtp-server ; f.i. DSmachinex.a.b.c.d.com

you can hide your machinename :
DMyourdoamin ; DMa.b.c.d.com

Then restart sendmail.

with what commando do I set the email-senders
name (acutally e-mails arrive as Super-User).
I want to change it generally to a default-value.

Hi Lothar,
you have to edit the /etc/passwd file for that. sendmail uses the comment field of the user.

Lothar, what version sendmail are you using?

(#sendmail -bs)

For a more secure sendmail, you should at least be at 8.9.3, and your configuration file should also be that version. The output of the -bs command will give two values... the first 8.X.X is the binary version, the second is the configuration file version.

From your last question, are you trying to change the envelope information?
