topic route add command in Operating System - HP-UX

I've been asked to configure a default route for one of my network cards. Here's an example of the command "route add net 10.210.33.0 netmask 255.255.240.0 10.210.33.1".
I can ping the gateway just fine as well as many many of the hosts on the 10.210.33.0 network. However, I continue to get the message "add net 10.210.33.0 ...network is unreachable". Why do I get this response when I can navigate the network just fine? Also, I only have one other nic card and it's on a completely different network. Any help would be appreciated.
More info...rp7400 with a quad card. I don't want to configure the route as a default route but only for this particular IP. If the number of hops is an issue, do I simply add the (guesstimated) number of hops to the end of the command?
