system crash

Hi,
We have an HP L3000-5x system running hpux 11.00/64. GR and HWCR pathch bundle installed is Dec.2000. We have two oracle installations 8.1.6 and 8.1.7. When we try to start oracle 8.1.6 and then 8.1.7 the database starts fine. But if we try to start 8.1.7 and then 8.1.6 the server crashes with the following error message in shutdownlog
"panic hdl_pfault: invalid DBD for intransit page"

I found a patch (PHKL_25525)for this problem in the archive and tried installing it but i still have the problem.

The server also runs Oracle HRMS application. If we have the database 8.1.6 started first and then 8.1.7 the databses comes up and we can start the HRMS applications. But the system craches after sometime with the same message. We could see that the "f60webmx" (HRMS application process) was using 100% cpu.

Appreciate if someone could help me on this.

There's got to be more than 1 patch that oracle requires, since Dec 2000. I'd suggest installing the latest patch bundle then use the custom patch manager to see if there even some more recent patches. Once this is done, and you have the same issues, then Oracle should be contacted.

Of course the big question I have is why bother running 8.1.6 and 8.1.7, when two instances of 8.1.7 should be fine?

Dec 2000 is really old. Trying to find one patch to solve one problem is really going to cost a lot of downtime and rebooting.

There are 3 sets of patches you need to apply:

1. CPU firmware for the L3000

2. GSP firmware for the service processor

3. June 2002 Quality and Hardware patches (from Support Plus)

I will install the latest pacthes as suggested and also upgrade the firmware and gsp.

I have the same stuff working fine on an N-class server which has Mar. 2000 patch bundles installed. The cpu utilization is very less by the "f60webmx" process in the N-class server. Does this look more like an Oracle issue ?

Hi,

If you have a graphics card in the server, then there is a problem with L3000 with graphics cards, in the way the graphics cards access upper shared memory.

We installed th following patches PHKL_22975 and PHKL_22976, and any other dependent patches.

Hi Hilary,

We do have a graphics card installed. I think after that we started getting the problem. Have u faced a similar problem. If so then i will try to put in these patches.

Hi,

We had a problem that when the oracle licence was increased, the box panic'd. We are running a cluster, the application failed over to the second box & that too panic'd, both with the message you received.
We patched the system with advice from HP but about 6 months later we amended some kernel parameters and updated the oracle licence on the secondary machine and the panics came back. We backed out the kernel changes - same problem. HP again were involved. They analysed crash dumps etc, and then spoke to the labs who told us about the known problem with L3000 & graphics cards.
