Multi Homed Systems

I have on K220, with two network cards.
Now only one is used. Is it possible to have
same IP on both cards (for network load balancing). I know one card can go with multiple addresses. Will two cards can have same IP? If not can it be on the same network ID? Before I try I like expert comments.

Hi,

for load balancing you will have to use

APA ( Auto Port Aggregation ) product of HP.

I think I will lety this excerpt from the the Troubleshooting Q&A section of 'Installing and Administering LAN/9000 Software' speak for itself.

Multiple LAN interfaces, intermittent failures: I have been having problems getting the two LAN interfaces on my system to operate at the same time. Occasionally the ethernet cards stop communicating with remote systems. When this happens, the remote system also cannot communicate with the local system.

Answer: Check that the two interfaces on your system do not have the same network number or, if you are subnetting, the same subnet address. If both LAN interfaces have the same value in the network (subnet) address portions of the IP address, the cards may not be enabled simultaneously (although they may both run separately.)

This is one of those things that almost works well - the worst kind of problem to have. If you really want to do this, you need to look into the add-on product 'Auto-Port Aggregation' (APA). Go to http://docs.hp.com for more information.

Hi,

As far as I can recall, SUN supplies qfe (QuadFastEthernet) NIC cards which supports port aggregation over the 4 ports.

I don't recall HP having a similar product (guys, please correct me if wrong).
