Hi,

You will have to count for problems with HW typical stuff.
Different drivers in kernel etc.

It's for sure not the best disaster recovery procedure.

You could try to do a interactif make_recovery tape to start with.
make_recovery -Aiv /dev/rmt/0mn

Then do an interactif install from this tape on the other machine.

Make a recovery tape from this system as well to be able to go back to the original situation.

C.

Hi,

I'm planning a Disaster Recovery of a server - however the current server is a V class and the backup server is an N class.

Will a make recovery using Ignite work between the two different server models (V to N)???

What are the implications of doing so?

Thanks is advance.

As per the UKRC s/w call you have just raised on this issue :

The cloning guidelines are:

1) The source and target system must use the same install kernel if using a
make_recovery or make_tape_recovery tape.

2) The source system must have the required Hardware Enablement patches needed
to generate a bootable kernel on the target.

In your case this will not work as when using a tape from make_recovery or make_tape_recovery,
the source and target system have to be the same type of architecture.
This is because there are currently 3 different Ignite-UX INSTALL kernels that
are used. The model of the system does not, necessarily, have
to be the same, but the architecture does or the tape won't boot. The kernels
are:

WINSTALL - used for all systems that are 64bit ONLY (N,L,A...etc).
VINSTALL - used for V class systems.
INSTALL - used for systems that can run BOTH 32 and 64bit (K,D,R...etc).

ps NO POINTS PLEASE !
Hi

Ignite was and is designed to recover the same server that it was initially created upon.

It can be used accress servers but as previously said there will be problems with hardware/ paths and kernel items.

HTH

Paula

As mentioned, it will be quite complicated. All the I/O cards (and drivers and subsystems) that are found on both machines must be installed on both machines prior to making the make_tape_recovery backup. This is neither desirable nor 100% certain. Always use a make_tape_recovery from similar hardware families. The V-class is completely different from any other family of the 9000.
