first of all you have vxfs version (Veritas File System version):

VxFS 3.1 - 11.0
VxFS 3.3 - 11.0
VxFS 3.3 - 11.11
VxFS 3.5 - 11.11
VxFS 3.5 - 11.23
VxFS 4.1 - 11.23

check sith swlist which vxfs version is on the both systems.

Then every veritas file system version supports different disk layout version.

2, 3, 4, 5, 6

This can be checked with:

#fstyp -v /dev/vg??/rlvol??

the different layout version support different features - for example the size of the sile system limit.

When importing a disk on another system the disk layout version is important, if it is supported from the VxFS then there should be no issue....

you mean to import on 11.23 system a disk from 11.11 system.

Check the vxfs version and the layout version, whether it is compatible:

VxFS vers OS DLV supported
--------------------------------------------------------------------
VxFS 3.1 11.0 2, 3
VxFS 3.3 11.0 2, 3, 4
VxFS 3.3 11.11 2, 3, 4
VxFS 3.5 11.11 2, 3, 4
VxFS 3.5 11.23 2, 3, 4, 5
VxFS 4.1 11.23 4, 5, 6

#swlist ....
#fstyp -v ....

>I have a file system that need to be moved

What exactly are you trying to do?

1. Copy files from RISC to Itanium?
If so, what kind of files? Data files, there is no problem. Binary executables you need to look further

2. Move the disk from the RISC server to itanium? What kind of volume management? LVM there is no problem. VxVM, you have to look at VxVM. If you are using VxFS filesystem type for both LVM or VxVM you may have to go through a filesystem conversion.

Shalom Sam,

Best path here is to simply do a fbackup of the file system and restore the data to the new system.

There is very little possibility of trouble here.

The data could also be tarred up or even copied using scp -pr

SEP
