Hi,

From the system console you should be able to
login and check some things.
First have a look in the /etc/rc.log file for
any errors. Also have a look using the 'dmesg'
program and the system log /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log
From one of these some error should be found
in relation to the problem.
Can you ping the server?

-Michael

Hi,

In addition, you may want to perform the following diagnostics:

1) Check local telnet connectivity from the server end:

# telnet localhost

If you can connect, then the problem is related to either your telnet client or the network routing. Proceed to 2).

If you cannot connect, then the problem is with your server end configuration. Check that your inetd daemon is running and that your telnet service is uncommented in your /etc/inetd.conf and that there is no restriction in your /var/adm/inetd.sec. Are you using tcpwrappers?

# ps -fae|grep inetd
# grep telnet /etc/inetd.conf
# grep telnet /var/adm/inetd.sec

2) Check your routing table entries at your client end. Make sure that you are able to ping your default router. Also, check that the telnet service is defined in /etc/services. Are you running any firewalls in-between?:

# netstat -rn|grep default
# ping YOUR_DEFAULT_ROUTER
# grep telnet /etc/services

Hope this helps. Regards.

Steven Sim Kok Leong

Hi Jacky:

It is likely that the search can be narrowed by asking the following:

> Why did you reboot?

> What did you last change? (Think of everything even if you don't think its related).

Regards!

...JRF...

Hi Jacky,

Check and make sure your network is okay. That you can login on the console and then telnet to the same server from the console. Login from console, then do a telnet to the system using the system name and the ip address. From and external system do a nslookup for the server name and ip address and make sure they are unique on the network.

Hope this helps.

Regds
You may need to start gated.
/usr/sbin/gated
I had a problem last week after installing patches, I tried to telnet and received
/dev/pty/ta does not exist. I ran 'insf -e' to recreate the files and telnet functioned properly.

nancy
