First place I'd check is your /etc/services file and ensure both ftp and telnet have entries here ?

compare if you can vs working system or I suspect the man pages detail the ports they use etc 21 & 23 I think

Hello, I just installed 11.i (TCE) on a visualize workstation, everything went smoothly, no errors on reboot, it APPEARS that everything starts ok, but telnet and ftp won't start. When I try to start a telnet session I get the message 'telnet unknown tcp/ip service'.. I've checked the netconf file, the security file and all all looks well so I'm stumped. I can ping the machine and it mounts NFS drives and connects to the NIS master server for the domain. Any advice would be appreciated!! thanks!@
Dear John,

I have exactly the same problem (telnet/ftp not working) and I can "fix" it by removing NIS. Once I re-configure NIS, I get the well known error again. How did you configure your NIS to get everything working ? - By the way, I am using 10.20 on a 735/125. I would appreciate any hint and thank you very much in advance!

Greetings
Thomas
