topic cannot detect cdrom in Operating System - HP-UX

I'm trying to boot from cdrom on a N Class but I cannot see the path that is attached to. SEA or SEA ipl would not return anything but the dds3 drive and the internal disks. I checked the cables and are seated okay. The paths are, 0/0/1/0.0.0 for the dds3 (HPC1537A)and 0/0/1/0.1.0 for the cdrom (HP DVD-ROM 6x/32x SE SCSI). If I boot with bo [path], it returns a "failed to initialize" message. How could I have the system recognize the cdrom path. Thanks.

Hi JDL,

Does the CD-ROM show up in an ioscan output? Provided, of course the OS is alraedy loaded.....
If not, or if no/unbootable OS, I'd suspect the SCSI cable.

HTH,
Jeff

Hi JDL:

1) Make sure that the CD's SCSI id is not clashing with any other devices.
2) Check the SCSI termination and cables.
3) If the CD drive, the controller, cables and the SCSI ids are OK, then it should find it from the boot console menu. If not you may have to place a hardware call.

HTH,
Shiju

Hi,
Please look at the following points.

1. Have you tested your drive before on the same machine? Check the SCSI ID of CDROM drive , it might be conflicting with other devices on the same controller.

2. Check the SCSI cable.

3. run #ioscan -fnCdisk and look for CDROM entry in it. IF it it there but in s/w state not claimed then run #insf -e command to create device files for this device.

Check the power connection to CDROM drive. as well as terminator if it is a single ended SCSI drive.

If not, then change the drive and replace it by new one.

The cdrom is is on claimed state from the ioscan output. It is also chained to the dds3 and is pluged into the same controller. The SCSI ids are 1(cdrom) & 0(dds3). I mounted the cdrom and I can read the installation disk. Have any other ideas? Thanks again for the speedy replies.

The workaround to this is powercycle the DVD ROM before you run the "SEA" command. Now try booting from it again.

Thanks for all the replies. You've been all a great help I am installing as of now. The power cycle before search work like a charm.
