Nico,

Thank you for the reply with Linux option.

I would like to know how to make Linux make use of 256M memory. So far I see one Linux box having only 64m.

I find HPUX is easy to handle all parameters in sam.

Thanks,

Steven

HI,

I hope this still get some interest from this forum:

My present sendmail Unix server consists of one CPU of 133mhz, 64M mem and 16K data cache. While java sendmail being rejected after 100 messages and then accepted again, I figure the Unix server is too old to handle bulk sendmail jobs.

I would have guru to give me some ideas about what configuration of a new Unix server would be. Its main purpose is only for mail sending. Quantity of mails to send at one time is more than 400 messages, or 1000+ messages.

Or do we need Linux instead? Which is better?

All your ideas are greatly appreciated.

Steven

the advantage of using linux is of course it is free, runs on intel, and is very stable..at least the RH 6.2 version is. I would use that if I were you. they made some drastic changes in the 7.0 release, such as inetd does not exist anymore. 6.2 is the better version.

I would indeed recommend Linux for this purpose. If it's only sendmail that will be the main service on the unix machine, even your 133mhz machine will do. Just make sure you have a lot more memory and fast disk acces (ulltra-wide scsi etc..). With the current hardware prices and Red Hat 7.0 freely available also a new server is not that big an issue. I would recommend 256mb internal memory, cpu power is less important. It's the disk speed and memory you need.

Instead of Linux how about FreeBSD 4.2? We use it for our mail server and much of our inhouse stuff. I like it a lot more then UNIX and have been using it for years. A PII 233 with 256MB of ram, SCSI etc. with Free BSD 4.2 makes for a screaming server. Just a thought.
http://www.freebsd.org/

Rob Smith
