What are the advantages of using NIS over NIS+ and neither?
Do many people use NIS, or are there any people who use nothing or something completely different.

If so how do you turn auditing on, on HP-UX under NIS

We use NIS and have for several years. All authentication on our unix servers and workstations is done via NIS as well as a host of other maps served by NIS. We have never had any problems with NIS. Our security auditers don't like NIS though. They don't like the fact that any user, unless you do something to control it from the start, can do a 'ypcat passwd' and have your whole list of users and their encrypted passwords.

I have heard that NIS is much easier to deal with than NIS+.

As far as auditing and NIS on HP-UX -- they don't mix. This has been much discussed in a few other threads recently. To do auditing, you must have a trusted system. NIS and trusted systems don't go together. NIS+ can work with a trusted system though.
