If you are using VxVM then it is mandatory to have a rootdg and then you can have additional disk groups. You may choose to use rootdg for applications as well.

Regards,
Ninad

Hi,

It seems that this is true for VxVM prior to version 3.5 as per installation guide of VxVM 4.1 which clearly mentions

"In releases prior to VxVM 3.5, the default disk group was rootdg (the
root disk group). For VxVM 3.5 to function, the rootdg disk group
had to exist, and it had to contain at least one disk. This is no longerrequired in VxVM 4.1. However, you may find it convenient to create
a system wide default disk group." on page 36 of the manual at
http://docs.hp.com/en/5991-1843/5991-1843.pdf

So yes you are right it would not be compulsory to have rootdg, but Best practices suggest you to have one.

Regards,
Ninad
