configuration problem

Morning ITR,
I have aproblem since I restore my hp server with my latest tape make_recovery. some of the volum groups are missing. When I try to reconfigure them I meet some problems.
For insteace when using to create a vg the same vg non problem but when I try create the Lv on the error messeage cameout. see the attached document.

I believe all you need to do is import the missing volume groups. First check to make sure the device files already exist: "ll /dev/vg*/group" . Assuming that they do, simply run the vgimport command for each VG.

Hi,

As Pete stated, if all your disks containing these VG's are intact & only OS disk caused the recovery then you can do a vgimport on all these VG's. These can be done through SAM also as you are allready doing creation through that. If data on the volumes is not required then you can go for creation for that you should vgexport current VG's & create new from scratch.

Check your lvmtab file
#strings /etc/lvmtab

Check the ioscan output to make sure all the disks are claimed.

If all the volumegroups are listed in the lvmtab, you might have to clear the entries for the ones that are not coming up by exporting them and reimport them provided you have the map files of the details of the disks that went to each one of them.

Hi,

As you have restored from tape the device files fo the volume group has been restored. So system is not allowing you to make lvols with the same name. Check for PVs listed in /etc/lvmtab and confirm by ioscan that they are available. Then you can simply run vgscan -v (make a copy of /etc/lvmtab). or use vgimport you will get all your data. Remember if you create LV again you will loose data..

The mechanism of restoring server from make_recovery is it will restore all data in vg00 (root disk) and information about other VGs so that VGs is storing in /etc/lvmtab file. I suppose you should do following:
- backup file /etc/lvmtab by mv /etc/lvmtab /etc/lvmtab.org
- vgexport /dev/vg0* if you have created them (all VGs except vg00)
- vgscan -v to create a new /etc/lvmtab file
- using SAM or commands to create new VGs as:
mkdir /dev/vg*
mknod /dev/vg*/group c 64 0x0*0000
vgcreate and then lvcreate
