cant create new VG

Hi guys,

I try to create a new vg but its not happening..
# vgcreate /dev/vg01 /dev/dsk/c3t5d0
Increased the number of physical extents per physical volume to 1023.
vgcreate: Volume group "/dev/vg01" could not be created:
Device busy

I have created vg01 under /dev then also make the nod using mknod command.. may i know what i did wrong?

Hi Henry

Whether PV create is thro for this desired disk.And also find out the diskinfo output for the same device.

just out of interest, can you list the group device files for each vg, such as
ll /dev/vg*/group

Check the minor numbers

Hi,
Try to increase the PE size with -s switch.
(8,16,32 ...etc)
Just a thought.

another thing. before vgcreate, did u perform pvcreate on that physical disk:

# pvcreate -f /dev/rdsk/c3t5d0

I am sure there is no problem in your disk

Can u redo the same things as follows

First check the LVMtab file

1.strings /etc/lvmtab
your disk should not participate in any existing VG

2. pvcreate -f /dev/rdsk/c3t5d0

3. mkdir /dev/vg01

4. mknod group c 64 0x010000

6. vgcreate /dev/vg01 /dev/dsk/c3t5d0

Hi Henry

Do pvcreate -f /dev/rdsk/c3t5d0 and then repeat the steps you have taken.

If it fails, try dd if=/dev/dsk/c3t5d0 of=/dev/null bs=64 to query the disk and see if it is physically OK

Hi Henry,

Is is through ? The reason for this apears to be only that your disk is rather not prepared for LVM i.e pvcreate is not done or the disk is part of second VG.

Could you post the output of following commands.
1. pvdisplay -v /dev/dsk/c3t5d0
2. strings /etc/lvmtab

- at first, verify the disk is the (free) one You wanted to use.
- at second, do a pvcreate -f /dev/rdsk/c3t5d0 before vgcreate
- if this won't work:
- dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rdsk/c3t5d0 bs=1024k count=3
- retry pvcreate /dev/rdsk/c3t5d0 and vgcreate

(explained: pvcreate -f does not always properly overwrite the PV/VGRA/stuff.)
