System Administration Position

Hi may acquire a first time system administration position soon on HP-UX. I have under one year experience with HP-UX and Solaris. Does anyone have any suggestions on certain types of training, and where to get these training that I might need to acquire in order to perform my duties efficiently.

Go to your local bookstore and have a look at their selection of HP-UX books. HP Press has several books on various aspects of HP-UX including system administration, troubleshooting, etc.

Of course there is always training classes from HP on HP-UX. Some good starting points are probably Sys & Network Admin I & II and then you can branch out to other classes. These are probably best paid for by your employer though as they are pretty expensive.

The best way, from my point of view, is on job training. I mean, learn from troubleshooting, once the problem is solved, you learned something.

On the other hand, try to use HP resources. I have some experiences about Solaris and AIX, compare with the resources which we can get from web site, HP is the best. Here are some fyi:

post your question or do search, you will find you almost can get everything you want, at lease some hints from experts.

The position of a HPUX-admin depends a lot on your organisation. My suggestion: get to know your organisation asap.
Do you have a 'infrastructure'-group; a networkgroup; a storage group; a 1st line, a 2nd line supportdesk ?
How many people can call you with problems?
Does the management require to deliver performance-reports or not?

Technical info about sysadmin can be found as described by others..
Often you are also a contact person for 3rd parties, like your hardwaresuppliers.. but most answers to technical issues can be found in this forum..

In my opinion System&Network Admin 1 & 2 are essential to get you started on the job.

Almost all companies (I think) will be willing to send you to at least one HP-UX training since you've mentioned that you only got 1 yr of experience. Depending on which part of the country you're located, you should be able to find if not HP then authorized HP-UX training center for your needs. After the first training the fun begins and this is where you would want to spend at least 2-3 years as you work and learn from experience, after which you can acquire more training of advance topics like "LVM Hands-on", etc, etc.

I find it more effective to learn it the hard way first, sweat it and make mistake (not too many) along the way and later when you attend advance training everything will fall into place and your understanding of the subject matter will come easy.

Get ahold of a test workstation that runs HPUX, and that you can safely experiment on.

Do an install of HPUX.

Read the forum. Every day.

Do what the Brains in the forum tell others to do.

Read the man pages

Look at the scripts they post, and try to figure out what they are doing.

Good luck. This is the best job you'll ever hate.
