vgcreate does not make alternate link.

I have a VA7110. I created a volume group:
vgreate /dev/vgutlva1 /dev/dsk/c7t7d5
and tried to extend it:
vgextend /dev/vgutlva1 /dev/dsk/c6t7d5
and the vgdisplay -v /dev/vgutlva1 does not show either pv acting as an alternate.
I know they point to the same LUN on my VA7110. Why would I not get an alternate?

What you did should work. Can you please post your 'vgdisplay -v /dev/vgutlva1' output so we can take a look at it?

Hi,

Did you do a pvcreate on /dev/rdsk/c6t7d5 before vgextending it?.

One common mistake people do is to wipe out the previous LVM structure on the alternate path by doing a pvcreate on it before extending it.

If so, then it is better if you recreate the volume group.

If not, then check your VA7110 configuration and make sure it is the same LUN in fact.

Nevermind guys. I fixed it. But I appreciate your efforts. I had some kind of corruption going on. I did a vgreduce, vgremove, and pvremove and started from scratch and it all worked the first time. Thanks, Vern.
