You have to manually set LPDEST in your personal .profile if you want it set every time you log in.

For example, add the following to your .profile if you want printer BR549 set as your LPDEST:

export LPDEST=BR549

It suppose to work?

Only if you use a real shell.

For tcsh and scummy C shell you need to use: setenv LPDEST printer

Of course "tcsh" is a real shell, and it is actively maintained! (e.g. 6.18.00 will be out soon, and I'll upload the builds)

I use tcsh since System3, where the only alternatives were sh (the bourne shell) and csh (the original csh). The choice was easy.

I however completely agree with (t)csh not being fit for either scripting nor for a root shell, but I also would say that the bourne shell is also too limited for that work.

Since then a lot has changed, and ksh came along with POSIX shells. I stuck to tcsh but I consider bash to be equally usable.

For a day-to-day job, tcsh should really be considered a REAL shell!

FWIW I use tcsh on HP-UX ranging fro 10.20 through 11.31 and it is avalable on my site
