Need to extend my /stand.

Can i boot to single user mode and unmount /stand then do the lvextend, extendfs commands just like a normal filesystem? Or is HFS different. Also, how can i tell how much room i have to extend it?
Hi Chris:

The short answer is that you can't. It's not that you can't extend an HFS filesystem but rather that this lvol must be contigious. Your best answer is to do a make_tape_recovery and re-install your system using Ignite. You are then allowed to resize the filesystems.
Hi Chris,

You cannot increase the size of /stand without reloading the OS. /stand need continous blocks and it is not possible to increase the size. Take a ignite backup of the system and then reinstall the OS using the ignite backup and while installing modify the size of /stand to suit your requirement.

Hope this helps.

Regds
Hi Chris:

You're stuck. /stand is the first filesytem, must have contiguous allocation, and its physical extents atart immediately before primary swap.

The /stand filesystem doesn't need to be very large -- enough for the current kernel, the prior one (as a filesafe!), space to generate a new one and a few files and directories that go into kernel support. If you have anything else, move it elsewhere.

The opportunity you have otherwise if you absoulutely need to enlarge /stand, is to create an Ignite recovery tape and reinstall your server from it. By choosing Ignite's advanced installation options, you can resize any or all of your filesystems at ignition.

Regards!

...JRF...

Hi,

There are only two ways to do this.

1. reinstall the operating system.
2. Boot of your ignite tape and extend it.

-Michael

PS you can actually unmount /stand but this
logical volume NEEDS to be contiguous!

Hi Chris,

The best method is to use ignite as stated by others. There is one more work around but is cumbersome.

1. Boot in 'lm' mode
2. Remove the primary swap
3. Increase the stand
4. Recreate the primary swap
5. Add another logical volume to account for
reduction in the primary swap if you want.

However, ignite is the safest method. But if you are going for ignite, try this first.
If it is messed up, you can always ignite from the tape. Otherwise you save time!!!!.

Detailed step by step procedure is given in this thread.

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0xd1d6d08cc06fd511abcd0090277a778c,00.html

-Sri
