My kneejerk reaction was "Sure, why not?", but after a few moments reflection I've got to say no.

Besides the fact that broadening the scope would almost inevitably lead to a dilution of quality, the forums ain't free. HP expends resources and effort on them to promote and support their products, not Sun's or IBM's. As I type this, I am building 3 Sun boxes with minimal documentation, and a resource like this for Solaris issues would be spectacular...but it would have to come from Sun, not HP. Just imagine if an answer was posted on a HP-sponsored website that broke or corrupted another company's hardware or software - we'd wind up with NO forums.

HP should (and likely will) look out for HP's interests, not anyone else's.

Jon
It's a good idea. We all have to work on different Unices fro time to time. And as there is already a Linux forum, I don't see why there couldn't be a AIX and Sun discussion on the ITRC as well. It is fine with me. One or two queries of these type are fine, but I believe we must use this forum to solve more queries of HP rather than make it a generic forum for all platforms.

Here is a sample of a sun query which I had replied
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x827f7d4cf554d611abdb0090277a778c,00.html

-Sukant

SUN et al, would probably not be too keen that their forums were ousted..

Interoperability certainly falls into the hp-ux category, however, re the miscrosoft being in the forums, well, running on hp hardware at least, linux too.

The forums is not a charity, it's a professional hp user support site. I think this suggestion stretches expected hps responsability a little, extended multios support is public domain..

Later,
Bill

Hi

I believe it is in good spirit to help out on any issue but believe this would turn the forum into a general arena.

I also appreciate many people work in multi platform vendor sites and could see this as being nice to have a central place to visit. I however have each vendors forum listed in IE explorer favourites list so can visit when needed.

It would also be very interesting to see what another vendor would think of a HP forum giving advice on there kit.

Just today there has been a posting for advice on Oracle 9i , I see earlier most people have directed the guy to Oracle web sites. Now I am unable to find the posting to see what else anyone has suggested.

interesting subject im glad you raised it.

all the best to everyone
John.

We do not need new areas, because if users ask questions about other systems on this forum, they are most likely to be related to HP-UX, or different ways of handling on the other OS.

I'm using HP-UX 10.20, HP-UX 11.00, AIX 4.2, AIX 4.3, and M$ Win2k (mostly with Cygwin 1.3.10), and hit system incompatabilities *many* times a day. I don't think that any forum member is eager to answer questions like "What is the fast path in smit to ...", or how does cygwin/xfce connect to AIX/CDE.

I've already seen many questions (also posted one myself) about HP-UX - <OTHER os=""> interaction (FTP, NFS, XNTP, ...), and they'll be answered anyway if anyone knows the answer.</OTHER>

Hi Siva,
You idea is great. But when see thro each users points you can jst conclude his knowledge level, and take for granted his suggestion would be of 100 percent right.

This will not be the case when you put all flavors in one forum. This will decrease the confident level of individual who is raising problems, They will be re-thinking twice before applying the given solution.

So I would suggest separate fourms for each flavor.
I would say NO.

If you have a question on a other OS which has a realtion to HP-UX this forum will answer it.

As this is a HP forum all questions should be more or less HP related. If it is hardware or software. Linux is here because HP PC's are a Linux plattform. Windows the same.

What would be the relation between HP and Solaris??

I would fear that a Solaris or AIX related forum here will start some kind of flamewar like "My xxx operating system is better than your yyy".

Regards Stefan

Michael, 'bdf' in AIX is just 'df' or 'df -k'.

If you install 'di' on both systems (available from http://www.gentoo.com/di/ or precompiled from http://hpux.tn.tudelft.nl/hppd/hpux/Sysadmin/di-3.3/) you don't have to think about that one and you'd be a happy camper and get the best of both worlds

Hi,

Personally, I think it would not appropriate to support other OSes.

HP sells HP servers running HP-UX, Intel servers running Linux, Intel servers running Microsoft. That is why it has forums on HP-UX, Linux and Microsoft among other software such as Openview software etc.

If HP ITRC support other OSes, think about the message that it would put across to players in the market. Such forums if created will invite criticisms across the industry.

Furthermore, you need a HP account to post in these forums. You get an account if you purchase a HP products and services. You don't get an account if you purchase SUN or other vendors products and services. The relevancy will not be there. Thus, there will not be sufficient critical mass to sustain these non-HP-related forums.

Hope this helps. Regards.

Steven Sim Kok Leong

Hi:

My reason is also NO. As Bill M. noted, this is a professional extension of HP, and therefore should remain focused on HP.

I think if we had multi-vendor "support", even in different families, that there would be questions posed without regard for family alignment. That is, I could easily image AIX or SUN specific queries ending up in the wrong family, making the culling of HP-specific information (in searches, etc.) more difficult.

There are other vendor-specific forums for other Unix flavors. Let those be the source to which one turns for expertise in those versions. After all, if I want AIX information I want to go to where AIX experts congregate and concentrate.

There's something to be said about generalism, but there's something to be said by the old phrase, "jack of all trades, master of none". I wouldn't want to see HP nor this forum become the later.

Regards!

...JRF...
